Digital BW, The Print

What is the experience here as to which is better when using non BO
printing? Specifically I am interested in the general practice as to RIP
conversion from RBG to CYMK with paper/ink profile, perceptual vs relative
colorimetric to get a "black" or duotone etc.  I can do this conversion
either at the workstation in Photoshop, or at the printserver withing the
RIP itself. I am using a big ColorSpan printer etc but I have found many of
the ideas express on this group (Epson) to be very helpful to me.  J Vee
