With what should I replace my once trusty Epson 1160?

With what should I replace my once trusty Epson 1160?

2005-04-19 by Mike Gerra

Well,
After 3 good years, my once trusty Epson 1160 has finally bitten the
dust. I cannot unclog the Y head, and have tried every recommended
solution, literally and metaphorically.

So, now with a gallery exhibit looming, I am looking for printer
recommendations, with following specs: max paper width 13 inches;
adaptable to CFS; dedicate to B+W; UT inks; various archival papers.

I've been very pleased with MIS inkset with my 1160, and have become
reasonably good in using and building my own curves. So, a printer
with similar workflow / characteristics would be great.

Oh well, I'm off now to the back yard where I plan to give my 1160 a
decent burial (after kicking it a few more times)! Thanks.

If you're looking at new printers, the 2200 is the best, with the 1280 just
about as good in terms of image quality. [My recommendation of the 1280 is
contingent on the sponge-less carts being available and working as well as
they have so far. (See http://www.inksupply.com/spongless_carts.cfm)]

You'll find the UT7 and UT2 curves much easier than the old curves. With
both systems you can use the Y position to have glop, a super-light UT-FS-Y,
or any number of custom inks.

If you're looking at used and print only matte and monotone, the 2000P is an
excellent UT-FS printer -- best dmax.

It's an unknown. The R1800 "B&W" prints I've seen with the OEM inkset are
not acceptable. However, I think there is a chance the 1.5 pl dot, all
those jets, and a good rip might be able to do interesting things. But,
it's all speculation at this point.

Paul et al,
Thanks for the feedback. Would you, or anyone else, recommend
for or against a CFS with the 2200?

I'm keen to avoid costly cart replacement, but then again, I don't
want the CFS to upset the delicate balance of a functioning printer.

I recommend no CFS. The MIS easy-refill carts are very easy and more
flexible. You can change one or more inks and switch back and forth among
several options for the inksets I work with.

I agree with Paul. The big dicision is do you want to switch back and forth
between different ink sets. If you do, the refiilable cartridges are the way to
go. If you only print on matte papers like I do, the 2200 with a continuous
ink system and Eboni black ink is the ultimate setup.

Paul,
One more question. I cannot find any reference to refill carts
or refill kit for the 2200 at MIS' website. Does the 2200 take other
carts? Thanks.

Mike:

Go to MIS and search for "Ink Cartridge Archival/Epson. They aren't
called refillable carts but they are clear, and they have little rubber
stoppers on the top.

The empty carts are available but hard to find on the MIS site. The
kits don't seem to exist for the 2200.

You can find all the carts for 2200, including empties by selecting
the 2200 on the dropdown menu on the Cartridge->Epson page:

See http://www.inksupply.com/c82refill.cfm. That might help. The bulk inks
are at http://www.inksupply.com/ut7_2200.cfm. The accessories are at
http://www.inksupply.com/accessory.cfm. I also have some notes on filling
these types of carts at the very bottom of my C86 readme file at
http://home1.gte.net/res09aij/C86-EZ-UT-Readme.htm.

Hope this helps.

Bruce et al,
Thanks for your help. You're right, no kit seems to exist, yet?!

Perhaps if anyone from MIS is listening in, please make it easier for
us to by your products!

I just ordered a "refill kit" for my 1280 by calling MIS toll free.
The sales rep helped me get all the accessories I needed and there was
a discount on the ink purchased as a set.
