Epson 2200 discontinued?

Epson 2200 discontinued?

2005-04-23 by Scott McLoughlin

I just read this, googled around and found other mentions of the same.
Any info on this?

I'm hearing there's a replacement for the 76-9600 printers that use the
same print engine as the 4000. The new printers will be called 7800 and
9800.

Time frame? By June 01, is my guess, fwiw.

We'll just have to wait and see.

More grist for the rumor mill.

I was at K&S in Palo Alto the other day looking to demo and possibly buy a
7600.

The salesman dissuaded me from even looking because he said "pretty soon"
Epson will be coming out with a replacement for the 7600 and I should wait
for the new printer.

I don't think a sales guy would turn down a several thousand dollar sale
unless there really was a new printer coming out...

He wouldn't give me any details (or didn't know), he just told me to keep
checking the Epson Web site for new printer announcements. :-)

Hi Paul,

The source of my info thought the printers were already released when
he told me about the "replacements". That was about 10 days ago.

Someone else emailed me and said new printers will be announced at
the end of April.

I think we should hear something by June, fwiw.

I vaguely remember reading on a printing forum (think on dpreview)several times that the 2200 replacement had been released in Japan earlier this year--with some arcane number. Mine is still going strong, but I'm not sure when it goes if I will replace with 4000 or the 2200 replacement.

It sounds like there will be some bargains for those who want a large format
printer for dedicated B&W. The UT7 doesn't need the dual blacks to print on
both matte and glossy paper, which is why I opted for the 7600 instead of
the 4000.

Those who do want the new one ought to find out what its matte dmax is also.
The 4000 is weak. On the 7600, I'm finding a paper type other than matte
gives the best dmax on matte paper. The 4000 does not allow this paper
choice.

Interesting.

I thought the R1800 was going to be the replacement for the 2200.

Incidently, a week ago I viewed some 11x14" color prints mounted
behind glass tat were made on an Epson 2000. Iwas really impressed.

The files were from a Kodak 14n. Now I was floored! I never heard
anything but negative comments on both pieces of equipment.

Just goes to show ya'.... lol!

Scott, I think the 2000 was good with color generally (particularly with matte) as I understood it, but much worse with b/w with much more metamerism than the 2100/2200. I will also say that a UK photographer friend who I think knows what he's talking about had a 14n for primarily landscape work. He said it took working with and learning its foibles (he's primarily a Nikon shooter, but wanted full frame/resolution)--but he's recently sold it and bought the new Nikon and is accepting the compromise. His online shots with the Kodak were lovely.

His employer should fire him because presumably the employer needs cash flow
on a continuous daily basis and it's the salesman's job to generate income
and not to act as some kind of independent consultant.

Fire the idiot, that's what I say.
