It's been my understanding that Joseph Ni�pce, was a lithographer
looking for a more accurate and quicker method of producing an
image than etching it in reverse, inking and transferring to paper.
He hit on using pewter plates coated with a type of asphalt varnish
that hardens when exposed to light.

Until now, his 1826 or 1827 "heliograph" of a scene from a window
in his house (8-hour exposure), was considered the first permanent
photograph... although technically a photolithograph.
