Dual Tones in the Same Print

Dual Tones in the Same Print

2005-05-07 by David Sinai

Hi,

I realize that my question might not be suited for this forum, so
please point me in the right direction if the following is
inappropriate for this group.

I am trying to print a portrait of a head shot. My goal is to make the
head shot warm or sepia (possibly somewhere in between). But the
remaining backround of the image I would like to be closer to a
neutral black. That is I don't want the background to have hints of
sepia or warm, but rather I want it to be black.

Can someone put me in the right direction?

I am testing this with QTR. My dilema:

I know what to do within PS, editing in RGB to get the desired
effect. However, QTR requires a grey scale image. The minute I
convert to GS I will lose my tones. How do I tell QTR the different
tones in the specific areas.

Also, is it possible to see a soft proof of this particular
combination before I print. Yes, I have the soft proofs provided by
Carl Schofield.

Thanks,
David

I know this is not the answer you want but can you print it in color
on a color printer?

I don't know what printer and inkset you are using, but if you use
one of the tonable MIS UT inksets, like UT2 or UT7, then the split
tone effect you want could be done using Paul Roark's workflow with
curves and layer masks. You can see one of Paul's split toned prints

Hi Carl,

Thanks for your response. I am using the E 2200 with the standard UC
inks. Acutally, black is Ebony.

Thanks,
David
