Change Over
2005-05-08 by Peter Mc Mahon
Paul, thanks for your quick response and I follow your comments. However, like all technology, things are moving on quickly. I am a high end amatuer photographer, who enjoys being able to print my own images, for exhibition and personal use. I also don't produce a great volume, 300 -400 A3 a year. My reason for saying this is, do I carry on with my 1160, or put my energies into the 2100[2200]? I enjoy the 1160, MIS VM, nice images, a little slow by comparison to 2100. I have a 2100 that I use for my colour and recently some BO prints. Is technology, user input, printer quality, favouring the 2100.[UC or Carbon] for B&W over printers like the 1160? because they actually or potentially produce better prints? I have just installed QTRgui and not being a techno buff, I like the user friendly concept, but it is noticable, that the setup seems to favour printers like the 2100 more than the 1160 with the range of made profiles. Living in New Zealand, the other side of your world, any change is considerable, as most of what is required, I have to import. I don't see that as a major, providing I can see good reason. So, the extension to my first mail is, do I change my 1160 MIS VM setup to the UT or....................??????? Trust you are able to fill in some knowledge gaps, in assisting with my decision. once again thanks, Peter. From: "Paul Roark" <paul.roark@...> Subject: RE: change over procedure Peter, The UT inks are the replacement for the VM inks. I made some UT curves for the 1160 also. In general, I think the UT inks show a bit more dot that the VM because the warm gray is warmer -- pure carbon (what the VM warm gray would fade to after a while). If you want variable tone, however, the UT is it. If you mostly do the same tones and they are within the range of the UT-FS or FSN, then those monotone inksets will print a bit smoother on the 1160. I have also made some curves for them, and they are much easier to make new curves for if and when you want. I would replace the old carts with new ones. That is, don't mix the inks. Good luck with the change over. Paul www.PaulRoark.com
