I wouldn't expect that the epson flatbeds would be capable of producing acceptable results scanning negs--not compared with drum scanners. But I think that if one begins with a high quality scan, inkjet printers (especially the Epsons) are quite capable of producing images as detailed and subtle as those created by traditional chemical methods.
