Greg Gorman on 4800

*Great (!) 21 minute Greg Gorman interview*...be patient with the
audio download, took a couple of minutes on DSL...starts with a
casual, rough ramble about fine wines... well worth it.

Discusses B&W in depth, mentions beyond-silver Dmax, driver
improvements, split toning/imageprint, paper wishes, Wilhelm's 300yr
appraisal, praise for Epson as a photographer's company, challenge and
success convincing Epson of "allure of B&W" and his distaste for resin
coated ("plastic")paper. He's printing "high speed" at 2880.

Another good link with more 2400 and 4800 interviews and reviews:

You mean Greg Epson Gorman, paid spokesman?

Do you have a problem with Gorman or Epson...or professional
photography? Simple jealousy?

I've found Gorman's online material invaribly interesting and helpful.

And, for that matter, I think highly of Epson, Seiko, Mamiya, and what
I've heard from an old friend about Sekei Mamiya personally.

Actually, regardless of what one thinks of whether he has a pro-Epson bias, I
found the interview worth listening to. Yes, he gushes about the new printers,
but it's informative gushing -- it really gave me more of a feel for what the new
printers can do (well, Pete Walsh's blog is more informative in this respect, but
since the printers aren't actually shipping in the US yet, I'll take all the real-
world info I can get). And he does have some specific criticisms that I agree
with: (a) Epson (or somebody) needs to make a heavyweight smooth gloss
paper that resembles air-dried fiber paper (rather than the unpleasant plastic
feel of current glossy papers, which I don't use unless I absolutely have to), (b)
the Advanced B&W mode in the Epson driver for the new printers should
allow you to see a preview of its effect on your own image, not the generic
one that apparently is there now, and (c) they should have made the new
printers 9 inks rather than 8 so that that you can have Matte Black and Photo
Black installed at the same time (and still get the "light light black" ink in there
too). He made a particular point about pressing Epson on points (a) and (b)
and he apparently has Epson's ear, so I wish him luck in getting Epson to take
these concerns seriously. Since I definitely do not have Epson's ear, it can
only benefit me if they listen to him, paid spokesman or not.

No problem at all with him or Epson. This is just a commercial and
nothing more.

For years photographers have been handed cameras, lenses, printers,
etc and it HAS to sway them to talk positive about them. Obviously
the proof will be in the prints this group gets off these new
printers. It will be interesting to see a comparison in about a year
or so with "our" results compared to "his".
No bitterness, just the way I see it, just a commercial.

From what I've seen and heard (and paid for) online, Gorman's been
accurate, never exaggerating, in Epson and digital photo discussions.

You've evidently tested a 4800, have heard Gorman, disagree with him.
Say how.
