Changeover costs on 4800

Changeover costs on 4800

2005-06-06 by Joe Davajon

Would someone who knows be so kind as to let us know what to expect in costs when
switching from color to black and white printing on the 4800? I've read posts that state
that 94ml of ink is used when changing over. The ink costs for a 220 ml cartridge is
about $90.00 so if we use 94ml in the change-over, we would consume about $38.00
each time we switched. So if one is printing color and wants to print some B@W and then
return to Color, he would have to lose about $76.00! Am I perceiving this correctly?

No; the switch you describe is from photo black to matte black and vice versa. Has nothing
to do with color, but paper surface ("glossy, etc. vs matte)

Scott,
Thanks for the response. So, if my understanding is
correct, now, I can be switching back and forth
printing color or B@W matte without switching any
inks? But, if I want to change to Glossy B@W then I
must do the ink change losing 94ml? I'm considering
buying a 4800 and selling my 4000 so this is of
importance to me to understand clearly. Your
consideration will be much appreciated.

Yes that is correct. When I switched from photo black to matte black it
used 90ml of ink.

Yes, except that it comes with Photo Black, so you are set for glossy, color and B&W, as
shipped.

The change would be if you wanted to do matte.

It still amazes me that it could use that much ink in the change. My
9500 only uses around 25ml each color for an initial fill, and the
ink lines have to be close to 6 feet long.

Scott,
Many thanks for your help in clearing up my
understanding! You are appreciated!

In the UK it ships with both a matte and photo black cartridge but the key
point is with the 4800 ou need to switch blacks when changing media but with
the 4000 you do not. But with the 4000 you have the old inks and no LLK.

But it does it flush the lines? Here the black ink is pumped out into the
maintenance tank and then re-primed with the new ink. You are good to go on
new media immediately.
