4000 to 4800

4000 to 4800

2005-06-11 by Joe Davajon

Eximvaios (www.eximvaios.com) got in about 20 4800's so I drove over to Berkeley and
picked one up yesterday. Some might be interested in my first impressions: Color is
much better than the 4000. Blacks are much denser and the rest of the spectrum seems
more intense. Laying out two 16x24 prints made from the 4000 and the 4800 side by
side is startling! You see the difference immediately and the difference is gratifying. I've
only made a dozen or so color prints so far but as of now I'm very pleased. I printed some
black and whites with Advanced B@W mode on Premium Luster and am very pleased with
the results. Much much better than matte prints. Blacks are very good. Holding up a
4800 print alongside silver prints on my wall reveals that the 4800's blacks are, at least to
my eye, so close that I don't feel thwarted as I did with the 4000. The only thing I feel
some reservation about is that I don't know If I can learn to love the Lustre finish for B@W.
Time and working with a lot of different subjects will help decide for me. As for trying
Matte, I don't intend to do that for a while as I understand the Matte ink is the same as the
4000 ink and I was never pleased with the dmax. Ever. Down the pike, I'm confident
someone will come up with a great matte black ink compatible with the 4800. We'll see.

Doesn't Eboni work in the 4000? If so, shouldn't it work in the 4800?

Joe;

I think the Premium semi-matte is nicer for B&W-it has a light sheen
and no texture to speak of. Perhaps the folks at EximVaios have it
in 17" rolls? they're the guys that cut paper to unusual roll sizes,
are they not? Maybe they have a sample.

Yes it will. But eboni ink doesn't get you much further down the road than
Epson MK. It is more neutral though but that would likely upset the Adv B&W
tone picker.

Or Epson Premium Semi-gloss. Out of Lustre, Ilford Smooth Pearl and EPSG,
the latter is my favourite. Pity it costs double ISP. Joe, glad you feel
the same way I did about the printer. Now if only someone would become
truly innovative and produce a decent matte black ink...I'm afraid ya just
can't copy the Epson one.

My own feeling is that matte suffers on all counts -
both with B&W and color, compared to Premium Luster.
Discounting the metamerism, color with the 2000P was
even good and intense with Premium Luster, and is
totally natural and fine with the 4000. Haven't seen
the 4800 yet, but I am able, with tweaking, to get jet
black blacks with the 4000 on Luster paper. Matte
simply sucks in my opinion.

The black ink is only used at the very end of the spectrum, where it totally
dominates the tones in all printers I've ever seen. As such, switching from
UC MK to Eboni will probably have no effect on the tone picker.

Tom:
Yes. They offered me $800 for my 4000 if the 4000
still had a warranty and $700 for it if not under
warranty. I took the deal and am as happy as a tick
on a dog.
