Hi Steve,

Thanks for the follow-up. I am the one who gets better shadow detail on a
strip with CM on vs CM off as you and others have recommended. My monitor
is profiled and otherwise get great correlation. I am on a Mac.

Here is my confusion: with CM off, we don't have any profiles available in
Print with Preview.

Then how do we convey the profiles that come with the printer or 3rd party
papers, eg, if I use Moab Entrada, and have a profile for it, how do I use
that (or any other) profile with CM off?

Thanks,

Sonny

Hi

It is not a colour managed workflow. You are just sending the underlying
file values without giving them "interpretation" by sending an ICC profile
along with it. In other words, the printer will not do any conversion of
the file values (because you have said not to and there is no ICC profile
coming with it anyway) and neither will PS do a conversion on-the-fly before
the data leaves for the printer === no colour management. The printer
just takes each pixel, looks at the 8 bit or 16 bit number and prints the
right set of dots for that number. The "right set of dots" simply depends
on the other settings in the driver (dark or darker, matte or photo paper
etc) and the firmware of the printer. Hope that helps.
