R800 and QTR

R800 and QTR

2005-06-20 by Stephen Kobrin

I downloaded QTR today and made a number of prints with an R800. I
should note that I was surprised how easy it was to install and use.

My point of comparison was a print on a 1280 using UT2 inks and Paul
Roarks cool curve.

I used the EEM cool profile. All of the prints at various 1400
settings (1400, 1400X1400, 1400 super) reminded me of black only prints
on the 1280. There is an obvious "grain" pattern to the prints; I am
not sure if it is vertical banding that others have mentioned. Using a
4x loupe it is almost as if you can see white spaces between the ink
drops. Sorry that I can not do a better job of describing the output
techically.

Again, as others have noted, at 2800 much too much ink is laid down.
Cutting the ink back to -46 and printing at 2800 produced the best
print of the lot. Under a 4X loupe it is still a little bit "grainier"
than the UT2 print, but at a normal viewing distance it is hard to tell
the difference. I want to reserve final judgment until I let the prints
set overnight.

I want to experiment further with blending the cool and sepia tones at
2800 with various ink densities.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. I would really like to see
profiles for a glossy Epson paper as that seems to be what the R800
does best.

Is there a "how to" guide on how to do this?

Scott,

I have all of 24 hours experience with QTR. However, there are
sliders on the interface that allow you to reduce or increase the
amount of ink and to blend curves. THere are only two curves
available at this point for the 800: cool and sepia. So, if you
select cool in the left drop down menu and sepia in the right the
slider lets you blend the two.

Agreed - I downloaded it just a couple of hours ago.

From what I can gather QTR is working in "black only" on the R800 as there
is only one black ink - hence the coarseness in the highlights. I'm only
printing test wedges at the moment, my starting point for any new system,
but with QTR the results are much coarser than using a custom ICC profile
and all the inks. They resemble "black only" printing on my 1160. There
is very noticeable banding as well which I don't get with the regular Epson
driver.

Yes, the paper came out wet!

Likewise - as the "Black Ink" selection is greyed out does this mean the
correct black ink has to be specified in Curve Creator? And how would the
latter cope with the Glop?

Using custom ICC profiles my R800 produces good neutral prints although on
some papers (notably Ilford Smooth Gloss) the metamerism is unacceptable -
prints get quite warm in artificial light. If I can tweak QTR to reduce
metamerism without introducing the highlight coarseness then I'll be a
happy bunny ...

Richard

Ok. So to cut the ink back to -46, does that mean the "Ink Limit Adjustment"
slider? -46 would put it near the "Lightest" side of the guage, right?

BTW, I'm interested in the 2880 DPI capabilities on my 2200. I'm not
actually using an R800.

Thanks!

Scott

Yes, it is the ink limit adjustment. The limit for the lighter side
seems to be -50.
