This makes sense (water comment). The print impacted the most (splotchy
white areas) was the one I applied a liberal coat of GAC 500 to. Second
coats to either print did not cause any more damage.

Seems there are three options. Apply Golden's solvent spray directly, w/o
applying GAC 500. Let the prints cure longer. Apply Lascaux fix before the
GAC 500. I'll have to experiment some more.

I've liquid laminated Moab Entrada and was not happy with the
pebbly/speckled texture. It seemed to detract. However, I really like how
both the Innova papers turned out. FibaPrint has a beautiful smooth finish.
The watercolour texture of Cold Press Art is at the other end of the scale,
and shows beautifully. Hope I can nail the process to cover these without
ink loss (sounds like Nick has had success).

Thanks for the feedback.

Terry.

Coating Innova Paper with liquid laminate OK?

2005-06-20 by Terry Ritz

I've just rolled some Golden GAC 500 onto two test sheets of Innova paper,
Cold Press Art and FibaPrint. On both I have some splotchy white areas where
the ink has disappeared in and around the edges. I printed these earlier
this afternoon (8 or 9 hrs ago) and I assume the problem is due to limited
drying time. I had meant to spray these with Lascaux Fix fist and forgot.

BTW, I have applied GAC 500 to a few other papers without problem.

Does my theory sound plausible? Anyone have any experience with this
combination (Innova papers and Golden products)?

BTW#2, I'm hoping that FibaPrint's really hard, smooth surface provides a
very smooth surface after liquid laminating. Moab Entrada, conversely, has a
small amount of surface texture that can be distracting with some print
material. I expect the Innova Smooth Cotton to be the same. I'm also trying
the same test with Innova Cold Press Art to see how the texture comes
across. I'll let you know what I find.

Thanks!

Terry.

Same thing happens when you get it really wet. I let some dry for
around 24 hours, and it still comes right off when you run water over
it. I think the Fiba went a few more seconds before the coating
started to come off.

Looks like these papers are best with a spray application, or maybe
solvent based products.

Hello Terry,

The line of Innova papers definitely reacts to coating
liquids differently as compared to other papers. What
works best for me is the Golden GAC 500 diluted per
manufacturer's recommendation, then applied very
thinly in the initial coat. The roller must be loaded
with as little liquid as possible.

Also it appears the Innova papers take several days
to fully cure. The fact that ink disappears into the
substrate shows the ink has not fully cured. After
an initial coat, subsequent ones can be applied freely.
