UT7 vs. UCMK/QTR; 7600

UT7 vs. UCMK/QTR; 7600

2005-06-22 by Michael E. Gordon

I have a 7600 loaded with stock UC (mk) inks and printing exclusively on
Photorag. I've been successfully and fairly happily printing with QTR and
this combo for a while, yet I keep thinking I should give the UT7 inkset a
try.

Anyone who has experience with both printer configs on Photorag: what is
your preference and why? A while back Paul Roark commented that dmax gains
with UT7 would be negligible over UC's (mk), so what would I gain or lose by
trying the UT7 inkset?

Thanks in advance.

Best Regards,
Michael Gordon

Michael,

One of the big advantages I like about UT7 is the ability to print on glossy
and matte paper without having to change the inks.

The UT7 is also smoother; its standard light inks are about twice as dilute
as the LK. Also, there is much lower color contrast, since the "cool" in is
very low in gamut compared to the full color inks used to neutralize the
carbon in the UC inkset.

Of course, if you add a UT-FS-Y very light ink (which I am now doing in my
7600) the highlights will be super smooth.

While the UC MK has a reasonably good dmax, I think the more neutral tone of
the MIS Eboni is a significant improvement in some of my prints with very
dark skies.

I my last fade test of the UT inks v. the UC, the UT were also more
lightfast. I'll be repeating this test with 4800 test strips in a few
months.

Paul: THANKS a bunch for your reply. I get the Digest, and I can see you sat
down and banged out a bunch of replies on a variety of topics at the same
time as mine. Your contributions and generosity to this community are overly
kind. Thank you.
