Warm Tone Paper

Warm Tone Paper

2005-07-06 by wittenstein2001

Hi
Am a newcomer to this group and to digital printing. Own an Epson 4000 on OSX.

I want to make a print that has an antique/warm tone. Is there an equivalent to what
darkroom papers would produce. I notice that Inkpress claims to have such a paper. Or is
this warm tone best produced in Photoshop using filters, duotones?

Any help appreciated.

Barry

I have not tried Inkpress papers so I can't comment.
Photoshop Filters/duotones are not really sucessfull
at doing what you want.

Instead I'd suggest using Roy Harrington's QTR with
warm profiles on papers like Condor Natural, or Moab
Entrada should give you what you are looking for.
Clayton's paper chase article covers a few more you
might want to try as well.

Good luck!

A good place to start is by reading Clayton Jones
material at http://www.cjcom.net/digiprnarts.htm .
There is a good review of some papers relating to
Black and White printing.

Also you can use a RIP,(good low cost one is Quad Tone
RIP)for custom toning.

Finally, and excellent solution is using MIS UT7 black
ink set and Paul Roark's custome curves using that ink
set for various papers. Many people are getting really
fine results from this combination.

good luck

One more thing. Paul Roark's material is available at
http://www.PaulRoark.com. He also provides links to
the MIS site for purchase of inks if you decide to try
that route.

Re: [Digital BW] Warm Tone Paper

2005-07-06 by Djon

My favorite paper for people pictures and anything else that's not
harsh and moderne is Epson Entrada Natural. It's not whitened, warm
white...like Kodak's excellent but little-known high-silver portrait
papers.

I use the heavy stuff, 300gsm, though I'm having my first
print-jamming experience on my 2200 after two years, presumably having
something to with the temperature (80deg indoors). 300gsm in 13X19
prints quite nicely from the top slot, but only if it's physically
curved a very little in advance to reduce its stiffness. Entrada has
been blamed for "flaking," but that was evidently a matter of some
early lots that weren't dusted well before packaging...I always blow
air on each sheet for that reason and only saw "flaking" before I
started that.

Actually Entrada is made by Moab.

Re: Moab Entrada/Warm Tone Paper

2005-07-06 by Djon

Right, I goofed.

Entrada's a Moab paper, available whitened or "Natural".

Moab also makes Kokopelli, an exceptionally OK high gloss (if you need
that...works well with QTR, toned warm) and a spin on Epson Enhanced
Matte, Kayenta, which I like because of the folded card stock.

Moab papers, in general, are my favorites and I agree
with the comment about Entrada Natural. However they
also have an Entrada Bright White which is great for
certain images and particularly BO. Their Kokopelli
Gloss is my current favorite of all the gloss papers
and the Kokopelli Photo Satin is up there with Ilford
Satin. Altogether a very fine lineup

Re: Warm Tone Paper

2005-07-07 by Antonis

Barry,

there is antique and then there is really antique.... Hahnemuhle makes
some nice papers that are warm-ish (such as German Etching) and that may
be all you need. But if you need to go beyond that, and you are using OEM
inks in the 4000, you can always tone the paper itself. Don't know how
well a yellow/magenta tint will last, but it will give you all the control
you need.
For tinting the actual image, what you need is the right profile for QTR or OPM.
No need to do an rgb workflow with the Epson driver - unless that
offers a look you like. You start with a grayscale file and tint through
the printing profile.

Antonis

Re: [Digital BW] Warm Tone Paper

I'll have to try the Satin...like you say, Moab's got a great lineup.

I came across a shootout test of glossy papers in Photoshop User
Magazine: Kokopelli Gloss was the champ, Vs a half dozen others. So I
orered some..I wouldn't ordinarily want glossy paper ... QTR warm
blend does a nice job of differently-colored selenium tone effect. The
slight bronze is almost a positive. It's less attractive than matte
(eg EEM) in color, IMO.
