Hi all you lucky R2400 owners. Has anyone tried Ilford Smooth Pearl for B&W ? With photo black cart which papers give good B&Ws ? Are the B&W that much better than the 2100 ? Peter.

Ilford Smooth Pearl produces excellent B&W prints with the k3 inks and 2400 printer. Various discussions herein on the Epson 2400's black K3 inks have focused on using the Photo Black ink on matte and semi-matte papers. My understanding, although perhaps incorrect, is that, while Epson's new 4800 printer requires one to swap between the Photo Black and Matte Black inks, the 2400 holds both cartridges at the same time, and thus no swapping is needed. Is this correct? And if so, why are people discussing the performance of Photo Black ink on matte and semi-matte papers? Thanks, Howard __________________________________ Yahoo! Many thanks Carl. Peter.

I thought that the 2400 had only 8 slots as well and hence needs the bk to mk switch as well... it just wastes a lot less ink during that process though but I might be totally wrong on that one... Howard, No, you are incorrect as you suggested you might be! The R2400 only has 8 carts, one black (PK or MK), together with LK, LLK, M, LM, C, LC, and Y. But I bought it for printing on glossy paper, so no problem. Bob Frost. ----- Original Message -----

Ok Bob and others, thanks. Here's why my misunderstanding: The negativity directed toward the new Epson 4800 was that swapping between the two black cartridges COST A FORTUNE in wasted ink, due to long feed lines, recharging cycles, etc. In contrast, the 2400 was said not to waste nearly as much ink as a result of swapping, probably because the ink cartridge sits directly in the cradle near the print head. Is my "new" interpretation a little better? >I have been invited (and agreed) to show 20 images at an exhibition in August (all bw). I have, by reading posts on this site, learned only enough to be dangerous when it comes to BW prints. I'd like to find someone to do 20 prints from my files (i have an ftp site for transfer), in the 11 x 14 to 16 x 20 range. I do have an Epson 22oo and have done some "probably" passable prints using B/O. The files are from digital capture and film scanned from 35 mm shot with Nikon glass. Thanks!
