Roark's Lab - Mixing Your Own

Roark's Lab - Mixing Your Own

2005-07-20 by rbehr2001

After reading Roark's Lab Page on the MIS website
(http://www.inksupply.com/roarkslab.cfm) I decided to try my hand at
mixing ink. My first mix was aiming for 60% Grayscale. According to the
graph on the webpage, this required 1.7% black ink (although the
example says 2%, careful examination of the graph shows 1.7%). I mixed
1.95 grams of MIS Photo Black with 112 grams of clear base to make
about 3 oz of ink. It didn't seem like enough black and sure enough the
resulting ink looks like less than 5% Grayscale. I've obviously missed
something.

Note that while the graph shape is about right, the mixing instructions MIS
has put on their "Roark's Lab" page are not from me.

Are you saying that a 2% solution of Photo Black should give 60% black?
Because my results were not even close.

Thanks,

Bob

Elsewhere in the MIS website it is stated that the black ink should
not be photo black, but some sort of much thicker black ink. The
formula is based upon the usage of this black ink.

You are right, the instructions do not specifically say Photo Black.
The site says "Do not use Eboni as the Black Ink for blending.
Original Archival Black, 7600 Light Black, or 7600 Photo Black are
the acceptable black inks for blending." But I can't believe the
differece between Photo black and 7600 Photo Black would change the
mix from 60% to 5% Grayscale. There's something else I'm missing or
the information is just wrong.

Here are some general targets when simple dilutions are used (which is no
longer the case most of the time).

I found the MIS LK to be about 30% MIS PK.

I do not dilute PK to make light inks because measuring errors are too
likely. Lighter inks are better to start from for consistency with small
volumes or less than very good scales. I often have used MIS UT-C as a
starting point, and LK is used a lot.

UT-FS-M is about 18% UT-C. UT-FS-Y is about 8.3% UT-C.

Before the latest UT-FSN was mixed with the new blue, the old UT-FSN used
the same hue for all the inks (not true with the latest version). M was 20%
C, and Y was 10% C. Note that the different pigments required different
dilutions to make the same densities.
