Flat screen monitors

Flat screen monitors

2005-07-29 by Stephen Kobrin

First, an aplogy as I know this question has been discussed
previously. Searching the archieves, however, did not turn anything up.

Can anyone recommend a flat screen monitor that would be statisfactory
for working with images -- i.e., using Photoshop. I live in a very
small house and a flat screen would really free up some space.

Thanks,

Steve

The assumption here would be that you're talking about LCDs vx. flat screen CRTs. Probably the best way to start is to determine your budget. Then, folks on here who are using LCDs in your price range can give some feedback. Otherwise, it just turns into a general discussion.

I use a Samsung 913T LCD monitor with a DVT feed from a Matrox
Millennium G550 in a WinTel system or with a G4 mac and have been very
well satisfied. High end CRT monitors may have a bit of an edge in
absolute accuracy in rendering color but considering that one can never
achieve an absolute match between screen and print that may be a tilting
at windmills argument. For B&W LCDs function as well as anything in my
limited experience. All monitors, CRT or LCD, need to be tweaked with a
profiling system if you are going to get the best image possible.
Considering footprint, weight, heat generation etc I would choose LCD
over CRT any day and not look back. "Chacon a son gout..."

I have a Samsung 213T that I purchased on sale for under $1000(Cdn) in
Canada. It is bright. sharp and large enough for me. It gives off little
heat but does cause some noise (RFI) on cheaper earphone cables. It also has
difficulty with details in deep shadows.

You may be surprised but Dell monitors are generally
considered excellent. You can spend "MUCH MORE" but
gain only little. If you are running Mac OSX then use
any of the Apple Cinema Monitors. The 21 inch uses the
same LG panel as does the Dell 21. Good Stuff

I have a Sceptre X20 (20.1 in). Got it at Sam's Club for abt $600.
Costco has it on their site for a little less. I like it. I visually
compared it to Samsung's 19" & 21" monitors and found it equal to the
21 and better than the 19; $300 cheaper than the 21" Samsung.

So do I. But at my workstation, I face a (fading) CRT monitor which
backs into a corner. And its rear sticks into corner space which is
hard to use for much of anything else anyway. So I haven't the same
incentive as Steve. But I want an LCD anyway because some of them
pivot or rotate.

A 19-inch, 1280x1024 LCD can, for example, be both a ~12-inch+ by
~15-inch "portrait" display and a ~15-inch by ~12-inch+ "landscape"
display. That's right-sized for me because, although I do like to see
the image full-size on the screen, a 16 x 20 mat and frame are as
large as I can conveniently handle in my small quarters.

The upper shelf of my two-tiered corner cart can accommodate on top
both my 17" CRT palette monitor and a 19" LCD, even in landscape
orientation. (It can accommodate more nicely a killer dual-display
notebook on the lower layer and a larger LCD alone on top, but that's
another thread.)

I don't know whether the other displays already mentioned as
satisfactory also pivot/rotate, but EIZO has pivoting LCDs which are
also designed for color-critical work at 19", 20", and 21". The EIZOs
are more expensive, but they also have the longest warranties and the
best spec's I've seen.

Below is a copy and paste of my "review" on Samsung's 213T I wrote a few months ago. I
have the 213T and also Dell's 1905FP 19in Digital LCD as a pallete monitor and I will say
the Dell gives the 213T a run for it's money and is equal in perfomance....the Dell is made
by Samsung so it only makes sense that performance is close! Actually the Dell is on sale
for $260.00 but sale ends tonight. http://www.techbargains.com/dellcoupons.cfm
Eventhough the sale ends tonight it will go on sale again in a few weeks, so keep your
eyes' peeled.

Also I will say it might be worth getting two Dell's 1905FP and using them in dual setup,
than getting one Samsung 213T...it might be cheaper too!

Anyway here's my review of the 213T:

The monitor is really nice. Is it an Ezio...no but for $650.00 or so it's really worth the price
and more. Is it perfect? No but it comes close!

http://www.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=10354201&loc=101&sp=1

A client of mine has a dual 213T setup on his G5. Calibrated with an Eye-One Display and
Chromix profiles for his Epson 4000 and 2200 output is right on most of the time.

When I first installed my 213T it was running through the VGA output as that was my only
option as my main card only has VGA and Apple's ADC connector that does not work with
the 213T's DVI connector.

Yesterday I ran the 213T through my palette's monitor card - an old ATI Mac 7000 card -
that has both VGA/DVI connectors. Wow...what a difference the digital connection
made...smooth gray scale and accurate color.

Viewing a one-hundred patch grayscale displays as very neutral...is it dead neutral on all
patches...no...but if there is a color shift it's so subtle that most will not be aware of this.
I've been in photography for about 30 years and I'm very sensitive to color...I can see color
differences less than .025CC (that's color correction filters in the olden days.) What I see is
differences less than that and only if I stare at it long enough and have a long debate
about it with myself.

Black Point is Black for sure. The Eye-One does a nice job calibrating as I can see the
differences between the 100% and 99%...it's very subtle.

The overall grayscale seems a little warm to me - a touch towards yellow - but I feel the
Eye-One could be making it so. I will say I like my grayscales on the cool side towards
blue, so I think this is more a personal preference.

There is no color banding on gray gradients whatsoever.

The 100% white point is white with no color shift that I can see.

As a Mac user I have two options that could improve the display a touch further:

Install an ADC/DVI adapter to run the monitor off my main card - NVIDIA GeForce4 MX
with 64 MB of ram or buy a new card. I feel my old ATI 7000 Mac card with 32 MB of Ram
is doing an admirable job but when I move windows around the movement is a little
choppy. And I'm sure with newer cards color processing is more sophisticated and
improved than cards made four years ago.

I have owned the Dell 24" display for about three
months and am very happy with it. The contrast ratio
is simply phenomenal, as is the brightness. Color
accuracy, after calibrating with eye-one is excellent,
so all in all a great performer and under $1K!

[Digital BW] Re: Flat screen monitors

2005-07-30 by Scott Jones

I have been following this thread with interest. Last time I looked
into this (? a year or so ago), there still seemed to be an advantage
to using CRt's for color accuracy and for viewing smooth type, also for
viewing any type of video without ghosting with fast motion.

Is it correct that these problems are now over and LCD's are just fine
for monochrome, but also critical color work for inkjet printing? Also,
is type viewing OK on these now? Thanks for bringing me up to date!

Scott

Hi Steve:
I've been using a Dell 19 inch LCD monitor for several months now and I'm very pleased with it. Much better than my old CRT.

Many thanks to all who replied. I certainly have a number of
recommendations to look at.

Yes. I'm using the Colorvision spyder with Optical. I have a dual display
with a monitor. I'm not 100% sure yet whether the calibration is working
correctly, although color correspondence/density with my prints is OK - not
perfect, but ok.
