Digital BW, The Print

Is the entry level GRETAGMACBETH EYE-ONE DESIGN all I need to do my 
own profiles in QTR using Epson Ultracrome or K3 inks as well as any 
other ink set. Is it overkill or not enough? I've previously use an 
old X-Rite 400. Using the colored inks do I need a colorspectrometer.

If all you need is the spectrophotometer, then the Design is just 
fine. The "small patch technology" really doesn't work for making 
full color profiles! I bought the Design because I needed a new 
spectro, and tried the software just for fun. The small patch CMYK is 
the ugliest result I have ever seen!!! Even after setting up a new 
RIP and making sure all the limiting and linearizations were correct, 
that small CMYK target could not make anything that even comes close 
to correct. The RGB is only slightly better.

The good thing is the Design comes with a 50% off coupon for an 
upgrade to the full RGB or the full CMYK, so you can get the same 
ability as the i1 photo at making printer profiles for a few hundred 
less (RGB profiles). You won't get things like the beamer hardware, 
and a couple other things, but you might never use those anyway.

You might consider getting the UV filtered Design, but that's up to 
you. I also suggest downloading the Colorport utility from Xrite, 
it's free for now. Search here for more info on Colorport.
