Galleries in NM

Hello, I will be in New Mexico in a week and would like anyones
suggestions on photogalleries. I will drive into Taos, Santa Fe and
Albuquerque. I am looking for B&W landscape digital printing. I have
not left the chemical darkroom (it is paid for) and need to see what
can be done before I am willing to put out the money to go this route.
my own digital work has been limited to the HP8450, so I am interested,
just not inspired. thanks Dan

Hi Dan,

We have several galleries here in Santa Fe area devoted to photography
that I would recommend. For the hyper-collectible real thing (Ansel
Adams' "Moonrise Over Hernandez", etc.), visit Andrew Smith Gallery on
San Francisco Street. Then walk a block to Monroe Gallery on Don
Gaspar - wonderful shows of all the old Life Magzine photographers and
other classic black and white. For more contemporary work, be sure to
visit August Gallery in the Design Center on Cerillos Ave., Verve
Gallery on Marcy Street, and Photo-Eye Gallery on Garcia. There are
several others worth seeing also. Here is a link to our Photo Arts
resource guide gallery page:

Have a great visit!

In Taos be sure to visit the Chuck Henningson gallery at the end of Morada Lane off Kit
Carson (follow Kit Carson east to the end of the business district and turn left). Chuck is
an excellent platinum printer who has made the transition to the digital world. There is a
website, which I think is www.chuckhenningsongallery.com (if not try Google). Otherwise
it is hit or miss regarding photography in Taos. Check the art listings in the the Taos News
(Tempo section) which comes out on Thursday. Other good galleries (non-photography) in
Taos are the Parks Gallery next to the Apple Tree Restaurant and Fenix at the north end of
town. Fenix sometimes shows photography, ask Judith, the owner, who she represents.

In Santa Fe, the Smith Gallery on San Francisco St in the plaza is the mainstay and shows
great work by well known photographers. But the real gem for photography is the new
Verve Gallery on East Palace (just west of the intersection with Paseo Peralta). Wilson
Scanlon and his father, John, run this place. They have a great website, as well,
www.vervefinearts.com. Check the fine art listings for Santa Fe in THE magazine.

I don't know the Albuquerque scene, unfortunately.

Enjoy

Sorry for the misdirection re: Verve Gallery. Tony is correct; it's on East Marcy. Also next to
the Photo Eye Gallery, in the Garcia Steet plaza are the Photo Eye Bookstore, Garcia Street
Books, and a great coffee and art magazine place.

There is another photography gallery in Santa Fe worth visiting,
PhotoGenesis in the La Fonda Hotel on San Francisco street. Joette
O'Connor is the owner and she is quite devoted to the black and
white medium, but, alas, only the silver print variety. I approached
her a couple years ago about representing me, and though she admired
my work, she said she wasn't ready to embrace digital cature and
inkjet output. However, there are some wonderful images to be seen
in her shop.
