Vertical Banding on 1290s using QTR and UT2 inkset

Vertical Banding on 1290s using QTR and UT2 inkset

2005-09-06 by Jamie Creed

I'm trying to create some curves (in QTR) for Epson Glossy and
Semigloss for my 1290s, but can't get rid of a vertical banding
pattern (that is to say - in the same direction as the printer head
motion) which is showing up on the initial 100% Ink Pattern Page (in
calibration mode.) I've not seen this when printing to Matte paper,
and have tried numerous head alignment operations. Also tried
different settings in QTR; speed, resolution and dithers.

Anybody out there got any ideas or solutions?

regards, Jamie Creed

OK I know I'm replying to my own post, but I thought someone might
benefit from my struggles, and maybe someone maybe able to explain
why the solution I found works.

I was having awful banding problems, when playing around with Epson
Glossy and Semigloss; didn't get any reply's on this or DBWTP forum,
so I kept searching the archives, until I came across some threads
with major contributions by Clayton Jones (wow, what a guy.) Clayton
suggested when trying to do a head alignment operation, that people
should try not to align the heads but rather UN-align the heads.
Well I've got to tell you, as a last resort I tried this and it
worked for me big time, Thanks Clayton very much, and QTR I love you.

Can anybody hypothesize as to why this should be,

regards, Jamie Creed.

P.S. I should have set my head to #8 #8 #8, instead I set #2 #2 #2.

My guess is that unaligning the nozzles is similar to introducing
vibration into a conventional enlarger column or slightly defocusing
the lens to keep grain from showing in the print.

But if it works, do it.

Cheers Bob, sounds very feasible and obvious when you put it like
that. I've got to tell you though, I don't think my images have
suffered at all to the naked eye. Thanks for your thought,

Jamie Creed
