Differences in K3 Ink Batches

Differences in K3 Ink Batches

2005-09-26 by Clayton Jones

Hello All,

Seems that there can be differences in K3 production batches. In the
midst of working up an image and making test prints (2400) I had to
replace three inks: MK, LK and LM. The next print had a magenta tinge
that wasn't there before, so the new LM must have been stronger.

I was using 6h/-6v on Aurora Art. Changing it to 5h/-6v brought it
back close to the previous color. By "close" I mean that I couldn't
get an exact match to the previous print (5h was not quite enough but
4h was too much). So the first point here is that ink differences can
be finer in gradation than the system allows us to compensate for.

I think these differences are to be expected. I have found
differences among Eboni batches, and differences in tone, contrast and
density among different paper batches. So the second point is that
these ABW settings may have to be revised from time to time - they
aren't carved in stone.

I think the greater lesson from all this is that even though we are
working with computers and digitized images we can't expect that a
print we make today will look exactly one we made a year ago. This is
not a new thought but it doesn't hurt to mention it now and then.

Regards,
Clayton

Any word from MIS on releasing the new UC k3 equivalent inks for the
2400 and 4800 printers? That 2400 is getting to be expensive to run
with Epson inks.

Hello All,

Seems that there can be differences in K3 production batches.

As in all inks or dyes.

According to PC Photo Mag, Epson's K3 inks for the 2400 cost $500+
for a complete set. Is this cost correct? Is it per gallon? Only
kidding!

Sounds like they're confused and quoting Epson 4800 110ml cart
prices. Atlex sells 2400 carts at $11.20 each (today's prices)...

Cheers!

If you look around you can find 2400 carts for about 12.00 each or slightly
less than 100.00 per set. If you buy a larger quantity you may get a better
price. If you are printing B/W with the ABW, the color carts last about
three times as long as the black carts.

That sounds about right for the 4800. They're probably confused.

And this exactly why 3rd party inks bought in quantity exist, and why
I'm moving toward them as fast as I possibly can. This new inkset was
designed, as much as anything to kill them off. It won't work.

I hope to get some MIS 2400 ink this week. I don't know when they'll be on

Clayton,

Could it just be due to settling out of pigments in older carts making the
remaining ink in suspension lighter? Will your new 'darker' carts become
lighter with age?

Hello Bob,

Good question, I don't know the answer. The only settling issue I
recall hearing about was with the big printers with ink carts that
don't move on the head. Since these carts move all the time I
wouldn't think it would be an issue, but I've been surprised before
<g>.

I'll make a print and set it aside to compare with another when the
cart is low.

Clayton
