Last night I had a long conversation with an interesting chemist (and amateur photographer) who worked for Eastman Kodak long ago. He has just purchased an Epson 1800 and he said that he liked the "consistency" of digital photography. He told me that chemists are always concerned about the use of "natural" materials like gelatin, which, of course, Eastman used extensively. Natural materials, he said, tend to be inconsistent. Their solution? For many decades Eastman had their own herds of cows so that they could control the feed and improve the consistency of the gelatin taken from hoofs and other body parts. And we thought we had problems with ink batches and ICC profiles.
