Refilling C86 carts - MIS inks & hardware

Refilling C86 carts - MIS inks & hardware

2005-10-02 by Al Young

Hi. I've been using EZN prefilled carts for a while now and am quite
satisfied with their performance, if a bit on the expensive side.
Accordingly, I'm weighing the feasibility of filling the carts myself with
bulk ink (MIS EZN).

I'm wondering what the experience of others has been refilling carts for the
C86.

As an aside, my sense is that refilling carts, even spongeless carts, can
border on the problematic - I'm hoping my sense is a little too pessimistic
via-a-vis actual experience with the C86.

Thanks!

Al,

The bottom of my Readme file on the C86 may be helpful to you. Let me know
if any of those URLs is outdated.

I've been working on the R200 for a couple of days, filling, re-filling, and
swapping carts and chips very frequently. The R200 carts are the same as
the C86 carts.

The good news is that I have had 100% good nozzle checks the first and every
time during this process. I think one key has been the priming that is now
done with the stopper out and air inlet blocked with a finger.

The main glitch I've run into is that some of the carts do not register at
first. The red light on the printer comes on. I go to the Ink Status
Monitor in the driver to see which cart is the problem. While wiggling the
cart a bit sometimes is all that is needed, the problem appears to be
marginal contact between the chip and the contacts. I've been able to fix
this by simply putting a small piece of tape in the well of the cart's chip
holder before putting the chip in. (I use a small piece of tape across the
top of the chip to hold it in but in a manner that I can swap chips easily.)

(The other more problematic glitch I've run into in making an EZ R200 inkset
[and not relevant to the C86] is that with smaller dots and higher speeds,
rheology differences and printer design differences are causing disconnects
between previous measures and performance, and what I see on the paper of
the R200. I think the R200 is going to make a fine pigment printer, but I
think pigment and dye machines are starting to diverge more as frequencies
increase.)

Re: [Digital BW] Refilling C86 carts - MIS inks & hardware

2005-10-03 by Lee Hiers

I've had no problems to speak of using the clear empty C86 carts and
MIS inks. I've got a set of EZN, EZW, and the color set that MIS
sells, along with their chip resetter.

I have had minor problems with air bubbles when changing carts, but
only occasionally, and nothing that settling overnight hasn't fixed
(I've probably gone at least three months since a bad nozzle check).
Before I started using the clear empties, I refilled the MIS
pre-filled carts and had worse problems with air bubbles, but even
that was minor.

HTH,

Lee

Hi Paul

The bottom of my Readme file on the C86 may be helpful to you. Let me know
if any of those URLs is outdated.

-- The links seem to work fine. The Readme file is indeed very helpful.

-- I haven't had occasion to do a nozzle check yet (it's worked perfectly
from the get-go, 1st time, every time). I presume the carts aren't moving
back and forth during a nozzle check, thus allowing you to easily keep a
finger on the air inlet.

-- Paul, do you recommend resetting existing chips or using new ones?

Thanks!

Al

Refilling the C86 cartridges has worked well for me too. I second
Paul's advice about the vent holes. Without it, you won't get the ink
to completely soak the sponge.

No, they move. It prints a pattern on a piece of paper. I run nozzle
checks if the printer has just been re-loaded or if it's been off for a
while.

Reset the existing chips. The MIS resetter is definitely worth the money.
