R200 EZ B&W inks

R200 EZ B&W inks

2005-10-12 by Paul Roark

I've placed an R200 EZ Readme file at
http://home1.gte.net/res09aij/R200_EZ_Readme.htm.

The ink formulation is done, as are some settings for popular papers.

I don't know when MIS will actually have the inks available.

As one might expect, the light inks make for extremely smooth prints. In
that respect the R200 is superior to the C86, but I still think few will
ever see the C86 dots.

The C86 has a better dmax with glossy papers, but the matte dmax is
essentially the same. The R200 with the PK I've formulated for it hits 2.0
with Kirkland, Ilford Smooth Pearl and Premium Semigloss, which are the
glossy papers I recommend for the printer.

The driver controls give quite a good ramp - almost identical to what I'd
target for matte papers with curves, and slightly darker shadow tones for
glossy prints.

Thanks Paul an excellent guide, to those of us who don't have time to
mess around for perfection, I need a simple approach

I presume that this would work equally well with r220 printer?

Cheers

Hi Clayton -

you'll need to delete the period at the end of the sentence - it wil then be ok.

Best,

Ted

I just printed an image with a near-black, red-filtered sky with both the
C86 EZ and the R200 EZ inks on EEM. In the very dark, smooth sky area the
R200 simply blew the C86 away.

Paul, are you planning to do UT7 curves for R200, or this is not
technically possible? I believe a lot of people already have this set,
for me, for example, it would be great if I could use the same inks
for both 2200 and R200.

Thanks,
Sergei

No, I'm probably not going to do a set of variable-tone curves for the R200.
I think there may be enough people using QTR and UT7 that people could just
share those R200 curves. (UT2 also works in the printer, but the curves all
need to be changed.)

It must only be in the UK and/or Europe then, it's an upgrade on the
R200, Epson's webpage on it
http://www.epson.co.uk/products/inkjet_printers/Stylus_Photo_R220.htm

It takes the same ink carts as the r200/r300, so I was presuming
everything applicable to the r200, would work, with maybe a bit of
tweaking.

I also have a HP photosmart 7150, that would be ideal to convert to B+w
but I can never seem to find the carts.

Re: R200 EZ B&W inks (R200 vs. C86 now C88)

2005-10-15 by Bob Baron

I'm looking for an easy to use printer & b-w ink combination to put in
the car and take to workshops or wherever, the idea being I can run
some prints at night from digital files using my laptop. I was
focusing on the C86 but see it is now the C88 (and Epson has given the
inks a slightly different name) and now I read this post about the R200.

I'm still thinking about the C88 because it is apparently smaller (per
the published dimensions) but am waiting to hear if or when MIS will
have the EZ inks for it (or for that matter, for the R200).

If anyone can give me information on the availability of the EZ inks
for either of these printers, or for that matter comment generally or
specifically on the C88 versus the R200, I'd very much appreciate it.

Thanks,

--Bob

Bob,

I understand MIS is testing the C88 now.

I have not heard what the timing might be on the R200 inks.

2005-10-16 by Bob Baron

Paul,

Thanks for your reply. I'll give MIS a call next week to see how they
are coming.

I take it from your previous posting you are now favoring the R200
over the C86/88 series. Is this mainly because of the 6 ink versus 4
ink modality, or is there more involved than that?

Since I'm looking to portability for this printer I would normally
tend toward the C88 unless I'd be giving up something substantial.

I've been using the R200 with Media Street's QuadBlack inks and have
been very happy with the results. Combined with QTR the print quality
is excellent.

RE: [Digital BW] Re: R200 EZ B&W inks (R200 vs. C86 now C88)

2005-10-16 by Paul Roark

I'm not sure necessarily favor the R200 over the C86 (I have no experience
with a C88). I think the R200 has a better matte dmax and deep shadow
performance, and the C86 has a better glossy paper dmax. For a lot of my
printing, the R200 deep shadow performance matters. I think most will not
notice the highlight performance differences in actual prints. Time will
tell whether one is more reliable than the other. I assume the C86 has more
cleaning cycles built in since it's designed for pigments. If one uses the
R200 reasonably frequently, however, I hope it would be as reliable. We'll
see.

I've had Eboni in my R200 for two months now and not the first clog.
Sometimes it sits 3 or 4 days between uses and I don't even bother
with nozzle checks. Batting a thousand so far.
