Congratulations, Clayton, on your success - 2005 Print Contest

Thank you Colin,

>Do you have this image posted anywhere?

Not at the moment, but I'll try to get it up on my web site in the
next day or so and will let you know here. Besides being surprised
and pleased in general, it was a special treat because it was taken
with my Pro-1, which speaks well for that nifty little camera. It was
also my first serious attempt with the 2400 (11x14), so I take it as
an asupicious beginning and a good omen <g>.

>It is difficult from Greece to get to Photo Plus Expo in NYC.
>Well not difficult exactly, but a trifle expensive!

Yes, a long way to go, and NY hotel rooms probably aren't cheap
either. But it probably would be fun to go to one of those shows
sometime. There was a PMA in Orlando a few years ago but I couldn't
get up enough steam to go see it (a 2.5 hr drive).

I sent in another print, an 11x14 BO print of the "Pillar and
Staircase" church interior. It didn't win a prize but they liked it
well enough that they are including it in the show. So it's
nice that a BO print will be there as well. My understanding is the
exhibit will travel to all the major photo shows during the coming
season, including PMA next spring.

Regards,
Clayton

RE: Congratulations, Clayton, on your success - 2005 Print Contest

2005-10-18 by David Keenan

I hate to be the cynic around here but...

Does it strike any one else as, um, curious that Clayton was awarded these honors by a company that makes photographic ink jet paper and Clayton enjoys the reputation where his word is gold as far as which papers the rest of us should buy and use?

Now, I haven't seen his image and perhaps it is truly wonderful and given his reputation, it probably is.

I would hope that Hawk Mountain truly did pick their winners in a completely blind way -- and they probably did.

Still, in these increasing sad days where it is gets harder and harder to know who to trust, I just find this worthy of comment.

Okay, I've ducked and covered and am awaiting the flames that this message will probably invoke... ;)

David, I think this would have been better saved for
your private musings or communicated to Hawk Mountain
- or, at least, saved until you saw Clayton's
photograph. Otherwise, it just comes off as
mean-spirited sour grapes and you should not only
"duck and cover" , but be ashamed.

Clayton - CONGRATULATIONS!...michael

Well you do point to something that looks a bit odd however having
read Claytons posts over the years here I trust his opinion as
honest, diligent and thoughtful even when I disagree with it which is
not often but it happens.

No problem other than appearance IMO.

Fair point if I had been a participant in the contest which I was not -- so I have no reason to express "sour grapes".

I'd love to see Clayton's print as well as all the other winners but so far as I can see they are not online at the Hawk Mountain web site. Perhaps they are available somewhere so if anyone has a URL, please publish it.

Thanks everyone for your supportive remarks. Here is a link to the
image. I included some thoughts about portraiture and added technical
info at the bottom:

  http://www.cjcom.net/portraitSJ.htm

The print was my first serious attempt on the 2400, and was printed
neutral-ish on Merlin Smooth, one of my favorite papers.

As for this other little matter, I have on countless occasions (mostly
in my younger years, thank goodness) had momentary lapses in good
sense and said or done really stupid things, sometimes hurting
someone. I am forever grateful for all the people who forgave me
those temporary excursions to the dark side and recognized that it was
not my true nature. Please let's do the same here and let the matter
drop. Thanks very much.

Regards,
Clayton

I'm sorry you feel that we would operate this way. No one associated with Hawk Mountain Papers judged this contest. We held a contest for images (photographs and artwork) printed on our papers by our customers. So we "know" everyone who entered since they purchase our paper, and many others besides Clayton also promote our paper among their acquaintances. Many of the prints from the contest are on display tomorrow, Friday and Saturday in our booth at PhotoPlusExpo.

Woody,

Your b/w contest prints were lovely! As a matter of fact, they are being displayed in our booth at PhotoPlusExpo this week.

FWIW - the judge for the print contest did not know WHO printed each entry. As a matter of fact, he did not even know who Clayton Jones is (sorry Clayton <G>). The judge strictly judged the prints in the categories as they were entered.
