Carrying framed prints in a box

Carrying framed prints in a box

2005-10-30 by Arthur Fink

As I get ready to hang a show, I'm faced with carrying about 20 frames,
size 16x20, and another 10, size 22x28. Does anybody make boxes with
spacers that one can put frames into, so that one doesn't have to worry
about damage to the frames or glass (or plastic)?

Not a direct answer but one that may help. Cut sheets of cardboard the same
size as the frame and then tape the frames together in pairs, facing inward
to each other with the cardboard in the middle. Then at worst any movement
will only bring the backs of frames together.

All I can tell you is that I had a show of 30 framed prints of about that
size. The museum wanted to make a traveling show out of it, the shipping
cases for which would cost (me) about $3,000 in their experience. I told
them I was really flattered and all that, but $3,000 bought part of a new
camera body I coveted or some nice wine I coveted at least equally....I hope
you find a more reasonable alternative. (I got the prints to and from the
place by stacking them upright in cardboard boxes with foam board in between
the frames, in my car and friends' cars. All that was missing was duct tape
to hold everything together. But it worked well.)
