The ebony contains no dyes to the best of my knowledge. Their
universal ink does contain a dye component and is supposed to
be good for 30+ years. The dye component will fade but not the
pigments so I guess it is better than dye only and not as good
as pigments only.

If not then what give it the increased dmax over other carbon pigments?

Elfin magic????

Maybe the other color pigments that make the color neutral, but I'm
just guessing.

I don't think Eboni has any color pigments in it. Its good dmax comes
mostly from the high pigment load (amount of pigment per volume). The
relatively more neutral tone may be due to the grind of the carbon.

Err it's not actually better on some papers...Try getting the same dMax on
EVFA with it...

Paul,

I found that diluting Eboni causes it to go warm, just like other
carbon inks, so perhaps the pigment load affects neutrality as well.

BTW I've been meaning to ask: do you know if MIS has changed over all
the UT class inks to the new base, including your experimental PKN and
the the FS/FSN inks?

I don't know if they are out of stock of the old PKN, but I'd guess they
are. I think they just mixed small portions of it at a time. So, all the
inputs should now be the new base -- but I'm not sure.

Of the inks I was mixing, the only old base input they still had last time I
asked was the R800 blue. This is used in such a small amounts that it
should not significantly affect the images.

Assuming that the Ebony ink has not changed in a while from MIS, and
assuming that it is the only point of present relief from the costs of
Epson K3 inks, it would seem that having good ol' Ebony to refill the
Epson 2400 matt black cartridges is a blessing.
Has anyone seen or considered that Ebony will work fine with the
nozzles in the Epson 2400. In other words that Ebony will not be
thicker, for example than the Epson Matte ink ?

And also the "microencapsulization" of the other pigments is not
necessary with the Ebony "black-black" because the factor of the K3
"microencapsulization" is not relevant to the black-black setting ?

Thanks, Jerry

Yes, it works fine in the 2400.

Correct.
