I shoot digital only for a few years and my best B&W prints where
from offset printing (quite expensive for a signe picture...)!

I own a R800 (brillant for glossy & pearl color pictures), and tried
some B&W with it:

- Epson carts, home made curves/balance correction. Not too bad, but
varies really a LOT from one set of cart to the other, and the light
must always be the same (metamerism). Full calibration needed after
each cart change...

- Black Ink only (MATTE) with C. Metairie "Black Pigment" Ink.
Really neutral, but not smooth enough in the light areas (but
impressive shadow details)

- Outsourced Piezography... to expensive for me

For the price of a handful of piezo prints, I've just ordered a R220
and a MIS UT-R2 cart set, results next month (I sell my Epson carts
on eBay)!

The R800 and R1800 are the wrong printers for B&W.

Excellent for color, though.
