Paper recommendation for a book project

2002-01-02 by frankg_photo

I'm considering "self-publishing" a few books of writing and quad ink
prints - the final piece would be bound, so the paper needs to:
a.) be thinner than what you'd want for a display print
b.) excellent print quality (it needn't come any larger than 8.5x11)
c.) be able to take the abuse of constant turning pages

Any recommendations for a paper ?

Anyone made a book & have some experience to share ?
thanks,
Frank

But be careful that the paper they recommend works with your particular type of inkjet inks...Not all will.

Also, although you might want thin paper, remember, it has to be opaque (thick) enough to not allow 'bleed
through' of the images on the back side of the paper. Inkjet images put a lot of ink on the substrates they
are printed on.

Yes, the ink bleeding through a paper is a very important point. I
would be using an MIS Quad inkset.

Frank,
I would give Hahnemuhle Photo Rag duo (coated on both sides)
in the thinner version (about 190gsm) a first trial.

I would recommend "Digital Book: Design and Publishing" by Douglas Holleley
from Cary Graphic Arts Press. It contains all sorts of info including paper
recommendations.

HI FOLKS,

i have been working on a "book" of my own images. set up like a
portfolio but not loose in a box. i was wondering if anyone knows
where i can find materials to bind this together in book form. i am
going to print on 13x19 paper. where can i find books this large? i
thought about finding old style ledger binders. any ideas. the prints
will be printed horizonal. these will be limited to only a few copies.

I have been using 32# Red River Premium Matte for a book project. It
is very economical and I also use it to make test prints that are
close to EAM. It is very bright white compared to EAM. I don't think
you will find a book weight paper that prints well on both sides at
the same ink lay-down rate as a regular print. You will need to
compromise. One method to get less ink is to use the o-head
transparency setting. btw the MIS pig inks look much better on it
than the Cone piezo inks.
