Farm Security Administration Project:

2005-12-21 by garethjolly

Ever felt like reprinting one of the classic images from the 30s?

The Library of Congress has 1000s of images available free in
'archival' TIFFS (10-50MB or more) - including such classics as
Dorothea Lange's Migrant Mothers and Walker Evans shots

http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/fsowhome.html

I produced some beautiful digital reprints on my R2400.

I'll confess I've always wanted to print one of these images in the
darkroom - might try doing a contact neg onto transparency. But I
don't think the R2400 can do this, can it?

Regards
Gareth

 Gareth:
Take a look at Dan Burkholder's techniques for making contact prints using Inkjet
Negatives!

Gareth, where precisely is the link to the 10-50mb TIFFS. All I see is jpegs.

The images I looked at had TIFFs, but they were the same tiny size as the
JPEGs.

Follow the link below, or more directly:
http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/fsahtml/fatop1.html

Don't click on the image, but instead the "Reproduction
number", which is a link. From there click on the image itself.
Next screen displays the various size digital files
available.

There are many (thousands of) amazing images, but it
is really work to find them. I found a brooklyn bridge
panorama last year that printed beautifully.

Cheers!

Also check the FSA site: http://www.loc.gov/preserv/pds/photo.html#negreg
They say 8x10" copy negatives are available for $33.

Thanks. Hadn't noticed this.

Sometimes the links don't work from the staff favourites and frequently
requested photo's. Instead you need to do a search under the name of
the photo.

It looks like they only have a handful of hi-res ones online, 15 most
popular, and 15 staff choice. I found a bunch of pictures of Cape Cod from
when my Mom was growing up there, but they were all tiny.

There are lots of others - but it's fairly random

I've downloaded maybe 20+ hi-res Walker Evans over the years (look nice on
the wall...), some Dorothea Lange etc

It's not easy to find which are which.

You can get into the root files by working back along the url from one of
the hi-res tifs - it's broken down into sections. Then you can see where the
hi-res ones are. But you can't tell what the actual image is... so you have
to keep clicking on one of the accompanying lo-res jpgs with the same
accession number to figure it out.

Don't discount the 10-12Mb Tiff's. As they are 8 bit grayscale files,
they work out to 400 dpi for an 8x10 print. And these are really great
scans which seem to need no adjustment to print. In fact I use the
Walker Evans image of Floyd Burroughs for printer tests.

EPSG & K3 results

2005-12-22 by Harry Saddler

I'm liking the combination of Epson premium semimatte and K3 inks,
but notice that I have to reduce the Ink Configuration : Color
density setting to avoid bronzing in the darkest tones. Is anyone
else finding this?

Also, the Epson driver currently has no setting for EPSM, but does
have one for "proofing paper semimatte". I've been using the premium
semigloss photo paper setting instead.

There is a company in New Mexico or Arizona (can't find link right
now) that is printing these and many more from the Library's
collection and selling them, framed or unframed. They must have made
a deal with them, I would think you or I could NOT do the same even
though the images are in "public domain". Any thoughts on that? There
must be some fine print somewhere.

See http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/fsahtml/fares.html

Remember a couple of years ago there was an "Ansel Adams" book that used bad
copies of his work that was done for the government. These images may not
be protected by copyright. The URL above leaves it somewhat an open
question what one's liability might be for non-fair use reproductions.

Some fine print on rights and copying here:

This varies with the different collections.

Start here:

http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/fsahtml/fsageogindex1.html

and you can find them easily enough. Under Massachusetts, Look for Cape Cod,
as well as town names.

What's your connection to the area? I summered there all my childhood, and
then lived there for ten years as an adult. (Now in SoCal.)

Thanks, Paul. I live in NorCal now but was married in Cataumet (just
over the Canal). My former wife grew up there, and I still go to
Wellfleet to visit one of our daughters and her family. I think she
might like some prints of old photos of it.

Thanks again.

Re: Farm Security Administration Project:

Thanks so much for posting this link. I found the town and house I
grew up in and still own! Imagine my surprise to see this house
documented by none other than Dorothea Lange.
The house is the third from the left in this photo:
http://memory.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/I?
fsaall:4:./temp/~ammem_CRiZ::displayType=1:m856sd=fsa:m856sf=8b35568:
@@@

My mom and dad lived across the street at the time this photo was
taken but lived in the pictured house from ~1944 until their death
earlier this year (2005).
This is one of those digital prints only available in lo-res. Does
anyone have info about obtaining higher resolution versions?

No problem - that fascinating discovery you've made.

You might want to post the name of the photo - I can't use the link
you've posted as it's a temporary file.

Ken Carney also posted this link, if you can't find a high res version
on the net.

Gareth,
Thanks for bringing that faulty link to my attention. This should
work better:
http://memory.loc.gov/pnp/fsa/8b35000/8b35500/8b35568u.tif
Thanks also for the other source. I may well request better
materials. I'd like to have something appropriate to hang in the
house.
Sincerely,
Milt

In looking at the file struction, it doesn't look like they have a
better scan. if you look at
http://memory.loc.gov/pnp/fsa/8b35000/8b35500/ you won't find any
large file sizes.

Will you let us know what you find out? In the past (a couple years
ago) there were not that many higher res images scanned, but one could
order a print, and at the time they offered one quality to most folks,
but if you told them you were an academic and needed the print(s) for
teaching purposes, it was possible to obtain higher quality.

Since the scanning is supposed to be an on-gong project, perhaps now
one can request a decent scan, rather than a print, which would be
terrific.

Yes, I'll keep you all informed of my progress. It'll likely be a few
weeks before I do anything. I'm in the middle of a bunch of work
relating to my dads estate and the house in particular. Thanks for
the feedback.
