MIS UT2--MUSHY MIDTONES

MIS UT2--MUSHY MIDTONES

2005-12-22 by bty10195285

I have just installed MIS UT2 in an Epson 890.Not very impressed with
the midtone rendering. All the midtones appear to be compressed into one
shade of gray resulting in a mushy print.I have followed Paul Roark's
workflow to the letter but to no avail.Even the BO print I am using as
a standard to achieve is much superior.HELP.Any advice is much
appreciated.Pete.

Usually it's a settings problem. Be sure there is no profile embedded in
the image (use convert profile or print with preview to check). If the
inkset is not loaded properly, the test files at
http://home1.gte.net/res09aij/Test-files.htm might show that. You might
also be sure the system will print with Color Controls checked and no curve
used. (No Color Adjustment is used in the driver when curves are used.)
If in CS2, use "No Color Management" in the Print Preview.

I can't think of much else to suggest at this point.

Thanks for response Paul,I have checked the cartridge loading & it's
O.K. although the purge test pattern looks nothing like yours.Density
of pattern looks alright but the colours dont match yours.Your yellow
position looks yellow, mine is grey. You mentioned checking that the
image does not have an imbedded profile but your website says "Source
Space- Document:Gray Gamma 2.2." The image must have some sort of
profile even if it is untagged gray--I tried this & it didn't help.
I have just tried another variation-- +10 contrast, this has helped
the overall appearance but there is still compression on the midtones.
Maybe I'm expecting too much from the pigment inks but their range
does not seem to match the dye inks.Having invested in a printer &
dedicated greyscale inks to escape the dreaded colour casts of the
standard colour ink sets I'm beginning to wonder about the wisdom of
my choice.I think the next step is to try to create a curve which
seperates the midtones more, but I am treading in unknown territory
here so it will be trial & error.
Thanks again.Regards Pete.

Pete,

The yellow position ink in the standard UT2 setup is sepia. If it's not, it
makes me wonder what inkset they sent. Are the bluish toners in the correct
spots?

You mentioned you used contrast +10. You're not trying to use curves with
the driver Color Controls checked are you? If you use a curve, the driver
color management must be set to No Color Adjustment.

Some printers are too far out on the ends of the bell curve to work well
with radical curves -- which are generic. If this is the case, a monotone
inkset with the ICC approach might make more sense. That way, as long as
you have at least flatbed scanner, you can make custom ICCs for your
specific setup. The UT-FS or FSN inks have curves made for them, and either
the FS or R2 inksets would be able to print well with the ICC approach.

Pete,

I had the exact same recent experience as you did with my 220 and UTR2
Warm cartridges from MIS.

Inks/pigments (whatever you want to call them) are neutral and not warm
at all. Muddy midtones, and poor Dmax. Prints are worthless on matte
paper.

I'm sticking to ink for now and lots of UV spray :-)

Pete,

If there is no color in the toners (especially LC and Y) of the UT2 inkset,
it's not a UT2 inkset.

Feel free to e-mail purge pattern scans. Do one with No Color Adjustment
and one with Color Controls checked.
