The FS 4000 is reported to have more shadow noise than the other mentioned
models, the Elite II is definitely the one most people complain about for
excess of grain (some do not by the way), in the LS-40 there is not really a
grain problem, however somtimes sharpness/ focussing problems occur with
bowed film. However you should be aware that grain gernerally shows up
clearer in scanned negs that it does in traditionally processsed ones. YOu
just have to be more careful in your choice of film, and the processing, -
use fine grain developer etc...

I use the LS-40 - it is a very good scanner, and my personal opinion is that
up to 11"x17" you will not see a difference in detail between the LS40 and a
4000dpi scanner. I have compared 2 scans of one sharp slide, and I saw
nothing, except that maybe the LS-40 was a bit sharper.

Bernie:

Regarding your comments on the Elite II, I thought it wasn't shipping
yet, or if it was, there wasn't any substantive feedback yet. As for
the LS-40, I heard that its collimated light source caused more
problems with film grain on silver halide emulsions.
