Suggestions welcome.

Suggestions welcome.

2005-12-28 by bty85172211

Hi Group.
I am a new member and have recently started to develop and scan BW
negatives which is something I really enjoy. I use an internet
printing service and while they are efficient and pretty reliable I am
not too pleased with the quality of the prints I get back from them.
(I think my scans are ok, maybe even good, I take a lot of time and
care over them.)
What I really want to do is to make my own prints and would be most
grateful for recommendations for the following:

i) an inexpensive inkjet printer whch performs well with:
ii) good quality dedicated BW inksets
iii) a good quality (and inexpensive!) paper to print them on.

I am sure the group is tired of such requests but any and all
suggestions would be most welcome. Thanks.

Mark

The Epson R220 is the top of my list currently. See
http://home1.gte.net/res09aij/R220_R2_Readme.htm for information on this
printer and the MIS UT-R2 inkset. Other suggestions are listed on my index
at http://home1.gte.net/res09aij/index.htm .

220 vs 200 for BO

2005-12-31 by Michael Vendrell

Clayton, et al: Is there a difference between the
Epson R200 and R220 for Black Only printing?

I now have 2 of these which after rebates and a
Christmas gift card from Amazon.com cost me about $25
for both. I was going to set up one with UT-R2 inks
and the other with Eboni and the OEM color carts for
BO and the occasional color whatever.

I'm also still wondering if the Eboni works OK on the
printable CD's such as the MAM-A's. Anyone know the
answer to that?

Thanks, Michael Vendrell

Sorry, I don't know, I only have a 200.

Horizontal "micro-bands" with 220 & UT-R2

2005-12-31 by Michael Vendrell

Paul Roark, et al,

I just set up a new R220 with UT-R2W inks. In the
dark grey areas I get just perceptible, but real and
repeatable, faint, thin light horizontal lines - I
hope I'm using the correct nomenclature for these -
would this properly be called micro-banding? With BO
it is worse but they're there even with ICC gamma 2.2
on HPR approach. Can this be fixed, and if so how? Or
do I just have a poor sample of the 220? BTW - nozzle
checks are perfect and alignment is good.
THX...Michael Vendrell

p.s: I also see horizontal white lines in the little grey squares
printed for the alignment in which one chooses the square without
vertical lines. Is this normal?

I use "micro banding" to describe lines that cross all zones, such as
caused by a clogged nozzle. I use "dither banding" for lines that
appear in only certain zones, as it appears to very among printer
models and seems to be related to the dither algorithms.

After looking at many prints from exchanges, it seems extremely rare
for any printer to not have any dither banding of at least a minor
sort visible only with a loupe. I was able to reduce it to almost
zero in my old 2200 by head alignment to low line-pair numbers (#2).
My R200 has more, I haven't tried head alignment yet, been too busy.

>- nozzle checks are perfect and alignment is good.

You might try a low, non-optimal head alignment line-pair number just
to see what happens.

Clayton

Yes. Choosing among the dither options in QTR produces different
effects on different papers.

QTR's "adaptive floyd steinberg" dither (sheesh...miserable if you
were a kid called "Adaptive Floyd Steinberg" !) works especially well
with alpha-cellulose papers, vanishing micro bands that are evident
with a loupe using other dithers when printing maximum-smooth (eg
grainless medium format out of focus middle skintones).

OOPS..it's "Hybrid Floyd Steinberg."

"Adaptive" was his uncle.

Happy New Year!
