bad printer karma - flashing 3000 panel lights

bad printer karma - flashing 3000 panel lights

2002-01-05 by janevro

OK, I've got flashing panel lights, all of 'em at once. Turning off
the printer for a while and disconnecting the computer don't
seem to make any difference.

I had just run a series of head cleanings, with cleaning carts
inserted, preliminary to inserting MIS FS carts. When the flush
image printed blank, I put in the MIS carts and right away the
lights lit up. At this point, the 3000 doesn't respond to the reset
button or the hex dump command and doesn't seem to care if
the carts are in or out.

Anybody run into this before? I am hoping for a secret reset
button somewhere and trying not to think of the possibility that it
needs a new logic board.

Don't panic, this is signal that flush reseivoir could be full -
mostly not true. Try switch off and on with [Pause]+[LF]+[Micro
Adjust Down] buttons pressed.

Re: [Digital BW] bad printer karma (BPK)- Part II

2002-01-06 by janevro

Martin,

Whew — thanks very much! What a neat trick.

The printer hasn't worked for two months, but at least the lights
aren't flashing any more. The easy fix has made me hope that
you or someone else knows of another fix that will take care of
the real problem.

In high quality/1440 mode with Piezo driver and inks (or with the
Epson driver) I had been getting fine bands of black across each
print, sometimes beginning an inch or so from the print's left
margin and extending to the right edge of the paper. Sometimes
the bands occur in 720 mode, less closely spaced, and
sometimes not.

I had taken the printer to the local Epson repair place, where I
was told that the print head needs to be changed ($337.37).
Apparently banding that changes when one changes print
modes is not a good sign, according to Epson.

As a last resort I retrieved the printer and was switching from
Cone to MIS inks, hoping that the Cone inks were bad. No such
luck. Now that the printer works again, sort of, I see that MIS inks
also cause identical banding.

I spoke with the Epson guy over the phone and he wasn't aware
of the buttons to push to get rid of the flashes, by the way. He did
flush the heads and lines really well, though, and the flush
image I printed was totally clear. I can't imagine there is a clog,
although at this point I am hoping for one.

Hi Jan:

I assume you did this, but did you run the alignment utility and how did it
look after foing a few head cleanings? Also, the head height might need
adjusting, but I'm not sure to which height since I don't have a 3000.

Thanks for the suggestions, Andy. I did run the alighment utility
and curiously, the heads are aligned. Also, the head cleaning
utility printed a perfect test pattern. (The banding occurs mostly at
1440 dpi.) Head height doesn't seem to make much difference.

The Epson repair place had the printer for about a month and
flushed out the system of course. When I got the printer back a
few days ago and discovered the same black banding with the
Cone ink set, I flushed twice with the cleaning carts and put in
the MIS FS ink set, without any effect.

I've resigned myself to a new black print head, which is only
$240, not the $334 I was first quoted. It's *almost* enough to
send me back to the darkroom — but not quite.

I doubt if the INKS cause the banding broblem. I've been using MIS and
Generations since they came out and see no unusual signs of banding and
certainly no signs of unusual clogging. I think banding is a printer
problem, and some printers are much more prone to it than others.
