Re: Sony Artisan monitor, anyone

Hi,
You should see if your monitor profile is the one being used by
Photoshop.
Go into Edit>colorsettings> under working spaces, click on the pull
down menu
and at the top of that , should be listed your monitor profile. On
the Artisan,
it is something like CRS photo D65 1.8 and a bunch of numbers. It
should match the one
in the Artisan software when you launch the cal utility
Hope this might help.

Hi Martin,

Thanks for the tip. I have ProPhoto RGB as my working colorspace becuase I have some
actions that only work in this space. But you are saying I should have the monitor's space
selected instead?

This kind of thing has always confused me!

I recently purchased a set of them from someone who created them to work in ProPhoto
RGB.

Re: Sony Artisan monitor, anyone

Hi Sarah,
I know its confusing,> I hope I did not mislead. I Typed in haste. I
just wanted to see if your Artisan profile
that is built by the calibrator is the one being used by Photoshop to
display your images. You should stick to
Pro photo RGB if thats what's been working for you; its just that in
that same pull down menu at the very top happens to be the place
that Photoshop tells you what monitor profile it is using.
It needs to match the one shown in the calibration software. Another
place to check and I have seen this happen is open the monitor's control
panel in system preferences, and click on color. You should see a
list of available profiles and make sure that the one built by the
calibrator is selected.
Sometimes it defaults to something else.
THis will make a big difference in how the screen displays images.

Re: Sony Artisan monitor, anyone

Martin,

I believe that I am correct in saying that the working space should
*not* be the monitor profile. Photoshop automatically uses the
monitor profile recognized by the operating system (at least on the
PC). The working space should represent something like the printer
space (gamma 2.2, dot gain 20% or something like that).
Photoshop "translates" from file to monitor and file to printer and
the use of the monitor profile as working space will defeat the
entire idea of "color" management. We are interested in seeing, on
screen, the printer space. The monitor profile used as working space
will limit the printed image to the monitor space.

Perhaps there is something I am misunderstanding in this observation
and, if so, someone should correct me.

Walt

Paul, thanks for clarifying. I checked the display in system preferences and the right profile
was indeed selected.

And Walt, I do think for PS it should not be, so I"ve got it on ProPhoto RGB
still.

Re-calibrating the monitor did seem to help.

Re: Sony Artisan monitor, anyone

2006-01-23 by Martin Paul

Yes, you are correct. I was not clear in my description. The monitor
profile used by the
computer is displayed at the top of the RGB working space pull down
menu in Photoshop. It is
not recommended to choose that, but just to check what profile is
being used by the computer.
It is easier and less confusing to just check that the Artisan
Profile created by the calibrator
is chosen as the monitor profile, and on Mac's it is listed in system
preferences>monitors>
If that profile is NOT chosen, then the display of images could be
affected.
