I got an interesting call from the company that sold me my 7600
offering me a sample of a premium-grade acid-free satin RC paper last
week. The rep stated that Sihl was one of the few actual manufacturers
of inkjet papers (most companies including Epson contract and re-brand
papers) and they were now beginning to market their papers under their
own name. The price for a 24"x100ft roll is a couple dolars less than
the Epson semi-matte, putting it at about $0.50 /sq.ft. Of course I
jumped at the chance to try it, and am expecting a 36"x15' roll
sometime this coming week. I'll report back on it as soon as
possibleand perhaps if it looks good initially some other list members
who have densitometers might check it out so we can get some hard
numbers?

I wondered about that, Eddie; it'll be interesting to see what the
satin sample is like; so far I know only what the rep told me:
microporous instant-drying, vey white surface(not neccessarily a
plus in my book, matching mattboard has been tough)extended gamut,
and 11ml 280g/m weight. The Sihl website states it is their highest
quality product. We'll see how well it matches up.

Sihl markets its own papers in Europe for a long time already.
I also think they are one of the few actual manufacturers and
coaters of inkjet papers. That doesn't mean they will not sell
substrates from other sources too. The Hahnemuhle, Sihl, Agfa
canvas used to be identical and I think it is originally a
Sihl product but have no hard proof for that.

I wrote that it was possible that Sihl made the Kirkland paper
when the Swiss origin of the Kirkland was mentioned in earlier
threads.

Ernst is quite correct,
in that the Canvas was supplied to Hahnemuhle, Agfa and others and was also sold under their own brand. Sihl also have made Papers for HP, Ilford and Kodak. They also coat a No of "Microporus" Papers.
