Use a third party ink such as Generations or MIS's Archival inksets with
the 1280/70. Better prints in color than the 2000P? Yes. No grain
pattern at all. MUCH faster printer. With a correct PROFILE for your
printer, you can produce quite nice black and white and sepia prints
from this printer. When you have your profile made, tell whoever makes
it to tweak it for maximum black and white quality, as you'll be using
it for this purpose on occasion.

Jerry,

I have seen numerous posts from you on well profiled achival colored
inks that produce good b/w prints (as good as hextones?). Can you
provide specifics, i.e., ink-set, and profiling method. Thank you.

Hi Shilesh,

MIS Archival Color inkset, 1260 Printer, Profiles by CD Tobie, Monitor
profiled with Spydercal. With Epson Archival Matte Paper and its
profile, and with Torchon, (royal riviera) and its profile, the color
prints are great, and so are the black and white prints. If you need to
do anything at all with the color tones in black and white prints, it is
to tweak the epson sliders maybe 3-4 points in the opposite direction of
your color cast. Once this is done, the black and whites are very nice
indeed. This may be harder to do on a 6 color printer, but I think it
could be done. I would still have a dedicated black and white quad or
hex system if you do a LOT of black and white printing.

Jerry

Hextones are just a tiny bit smoother, (especially noticeable in a wide
blurred area, such as a sun or moon with a soft glow.) On this type of
image, the 6 color printers do a MUCH better job rendering the glow than
the 4 color printers do. The 4 color printers clip the glow way too
soon, and it doesn't look realistic.

Jerry,

Thank you. I have a dedicated system each for b/w (MIS VM) and color
(MediaSteeet dyes/). I guess I have been wondering if the holy grail
has been found yet.

NO, I'm talking about PIGMENT inks. Generations, from Media Street,
Archival Color Pigments from MIS.

RE: [Digital BW] Can 1270 MIS curves be used on the 870? [off list]

Kevin,

If the 870 is the smaller version of the 1270, the curves should work.
