I am just now getting into B&W digital printing with the purchase of a 2400 - leaving the wet darkroom after 40 years. I use Monaco EZ Color to make custom profiles for color. Will the same profile also work for Black and White for a specific paper?

No. Think of the Epson Adv B&W part of the driver as a completely different driver and so your colour profiles profile a completely different beast. Check out the ICC profiling part of Quadtone RIP. Works like a charm and provides full soft proofing. Only $50. http://www.quadtonerip.com/html/QTRoverview.html

I'm getting ver acceptable B&W prints through PrintFIX PRO 225 patch profiles (though they are still subject to all the limitations noted above), and can see some slight improvement in B&W prints on certain difficult printer/ink combinations by moving up to the 729 patch target. Its still not a total solution for black and white; but then, it works on most any printer, and doesn't require a dedicated inkset or RIP, so the convenience is there, if not the stability. C. Not really an issue on the 2400, which uses three dilutions of fairly neutral blacks (K, LK, and LLK) and has drivers set up to "lean" very heavily on the blacks when printing any neutral or near neutral color, even in its color modes. It uses only enough colored inks to "tint" the neutrals. Steve Kale's answer, about using the Epson ABW (advanced B&W) mode is the correct one. This mode makes neutral B&W easier than driving the printer's color mode through PhotoShop or other printing software.

One important new ability is its ABW system which allows making BW prints without requiring profiles. Use QTR Create ICC to generate an ICC profile (amended spec) and you get full and accurate soft proofing. Once you've got your preferred set of hues there's no trial and error.

Hello. I'm need to be a scientific? if I want to make artistic photo to show in gallery. After I read the e-mail from this group I'm scary. Ok my question is, If I buy epson 2400, Epson original ink and epson best photo paper I can make professional photos. I don't go to make commercial or wedding photos. I only go to print limeted edition ( only 2) one for sale and one for my self. I don't go to use thirt party ink. no need for science with the 2400. It works great on all epson premium papers. Very easy, with not a lot of test-printing. Just find a tone setting that you like in the "Advanced Black and white" (ABW) mode. there are four basic settings for "darkness". Just find the one that works best for your computer.
