converting grayscale image to 4-color CIS

converting grayscale image to 4-color CIS

2001-08-14 by RHRohlfing@aol.com

Hello all,

It's funny, I think I understand every single word that is discussed
in this group. However, I can only understand the concepts a small
portion of the time.

I'm in awe of the overall knowledge of the folks here.

I would like to know why some workflows suggested by members convert
grayscale tones to color instructions -- Cyan, Yellow, Magenta &
Black and other workflows don't seem to do the conversions. Am I
overlooking something here?

Specifically, I'm using an 1160 with the original MIS Quadtone set.
I've tried different workflows suggested on the MIS site. Some
change the screen view to color and others don't. Why?

I appreciate anyone's help to make this clear to a feeble mind.

Richard

Richard,

You mention CMYK, but if you are using an Epson driver without a RIP, you
only need go to RGB. The Epson driver takes the RGB (which it thinks is real
color information) and separates it internally into CMYK.

The reason to convert grayscale to RGB is to control how the grayscale will
eventually separate into the 4 inks. If some of these inks are tinted (see Paul
Roark's methods), you also control monochrome tints for different tonal areas.

Does that help?

Antonis

Reminds me of the great attributes of an old lunchpail vacuum
bottle. It keeps hot things hot and cold things cold -- Yes, but,
how does it know?

Thanks Antonis. It is becoming clearer!

Richard,

glad to have helped. The vacuum bottle analogy is precious, btw...!
