There are really two ways to go with this: get a one-trick-pony, an actual
densitmeter that won't ever do anything else. The questions that raises are that
these tend to be older devices, with the usual reliability, maintainence, and
compatibility issues older equipment can have. Or use a newer device to
emulate a densitometer. This has the advantages of allowing you to use the device
for other purposes, such as L*a*b* value readings, ICC profile building etc.
But this may cost more. However, the price balance isn't quite that it used to
be, as you should be able to get all of this (densitey values for QTR, Lab
measurements, and ICC color printer profiles) from PrintFIX PRO, for under $500.

So the lowest cost solution for density only is still likely to be an ebay
densitometer, but the price for getting a more flexible solution is lower than
it used to be.
