Medium Newbie on Printing-What is RIP

Raster Image Processor (or Program)

It's a program that "tells" the printer what to do with the data that
comes from the computer - e.g. which ink, how much ink, where, and
with what dither pattern, etc., etc...in essence, and over-siplified
by me, a specialized driver for the printer.

So it is different than the ICC Profiles I use on my Epson 2400?

Yes,different. These (e.g. QTR = QuadToneRip) are
separate programs. The ABW is, again, to
oversimplify, a very specialized B&W RIP contained
within, or bundled with the Epson driver for the 2400.

Mel,
Here's a link that i found useful when i asked the same question. Yes it refers to a specific
RIP,{imageprint} and there is good general info also.
Good luck!
