r1800 and print driver for black only?

r1800 and print driver for black only?

2006-04-20 by McDoogla

Maybe this is answered somewhere in the 70K messages, but since I
can't search: do I need a different driver for Black Only priting on
the r1800? The Epson US one has a grayscale function which I think
only prints in composite (color) black and white. Some have said the
Uk version has a black only toggle...

I tried the Japanese version, which seems to let me select between
black and color, but the prints still looked like composites and not
black only.

Any ideas?

Hmmmm....I didn't think one could do BO on the 1800.

Hi;

You can't do BO with the Epson driver AFAIK, but some of us have
been using QTR with the R1800 with good results. BO with the Epson
inks is warm-toned, but with Eboni its fairly neutral. I've been
using MIS' K4 inks with it, with Eboni and Photo Black in the normal
slots, LK in the gloss optimizer slot, and LLK in the red slot.
adjusting the tone to neutral works with the blue and cyan, and
going sepia works with the magenta and yellow. It takes a bit more
effort to figure out how to do the curves, but you can do a pretty
fair job without a densitometer.Too bad there aren't more 'canned'
curves for that printer, it got bypassed in the stampede to the
2400. A shame, because having both glossy papers and matte available
with out switching is very convenient.

I think I may have figured out how to do it without QTR...the UK
driver indeed has a Grayscale function on it that isn't on the US
driver. At first I thought it was the same as the black and white
functions on the US driver (which do RGB black and white and give you
a choice of warm, cool, sepia or nuetral.) But I tried the UK
grayscale and I think it's BO...the black area is really rich, and I
can't see as uch of a bluish tint (and through a loupe I don't think I
see any colored dots, but this printer's dots are SMALL!). So maybe.
I'll have to download QTR's trial and see if that yields a very
different print.

Look carefuly; that ink is warm-toned by itself, there shouldn't be any
bluishness at all, it should in fact be a bit brownish.

Okay, in the meanwhile I downloaded QTR and tried that. Indeed, even
the UK driver doesn't allow for black only. It's too neutral. I
printed out a few images (and I'm using just the standard Epson matte
until the Eboni I ordered yesterday gets here) through QTR and they
are almost sepia/brownish as you (Steve) suggested. I guess I need to
buy QTR to do this!

Doug;

QTR seems to be the only reasonably priced way to do this...One other
QTR based alternative to consider: you're switching to Eboni, are you
also switching to the MIS Pro color inks for the 1800? if you are, but
don't want to give up color (by going K3, then consider putting an LK
in the Gloss slot and going K2. The gloss for the MIS color inks does
very little (and the color is still very good), but the extra shade of
K for B&W does a LOT. The only down side is that the gloss position
seems to be harder to keep clean and running properly, but it is worth
the trouble. But try BO first, & see how well you like it, then go from
there.
