Variable Tone Inks - Update

Variable Tone Inks - Update

2001-08-15 by Michael J. Kravit

I promised Antonis that I would provide the group with an update on
the development of the Variable Ink Curves for the 7000.

After a marathin session with Paul Roark, the Neutral Curve looks
really good (my opinion, hope Paul agrees). The Warm Curve is at mid-
stage and needs a bit of work.

At first I though that the neutral curve was just "so cold" it was
blue. I guess after printing with Piezo for the past year everything
looks cold to me. But, I just finished printing an image with the
last iteration of the curve and I must say that I am truly impressed.

Lovely continuous tones, smooth textures, and no sign of dots.

I am using the new MIS CFS for the 7000 with 500ml bottles attached.
The inks are on the MIS website and if I calculated right cost
$.08/ml as opposed to $0.68/ml for Piezo Inks.

The curves for the Variable-Tone Inks for the 7000 are progressing
very nicely. Paul is very talented and should be thanked for taking
hours upon hours to develop this system as an open system for all to
enjoy and use.

Thanks Paul

Mike

Thanks Mike. You are a man of your word!! I posted excerpts from these
messages in the Files section.

...for all eternity - or until the prints start to fade, whichever comes first.

I would like to add my thanks to Paul. I was way too shy of the warm tone of
Piezo to buy into that system. Plus, I've done too much darkroom toning to
be comfortable with just one hue to choose from. So were it not for Paul I
would not be doing any digital BW printing at all yet.

I started with his piezo/generations ink blend and felt very fortunate to at
least exclude the price of the piezo driver. Now that he's worked this out
with MIS inks, the price per print is getting really affordable. With this
he's added to my creative palette and at the same time is saving me some
dinero to boot.

Anyway, the time Paul has put into this endeavor can be nothing short of
massive, yet he's given it away freely. This is a rare breed.

Paul, you've made a huge contribution to monochrome inkjet printing, and I
thank you deeply. You are a mensch.
