Seeing, Instinct, and Interpretation

Seeing, Instinct, and Interpretation

2006-05-27 by Keith Zimmerman

Greetings All,

I don't post a lot, but I read everything I can and have several
threads that have touched on something I am very passionate about,
creativity.

Learning to see rather than to look, is the key to being able to
interpret the world. Once a person learns to see, AND has mastered
the tools of his/her art, everything becomes second-nature and
instinctual.

Instinct is something everyone has. It's just a matter of listening
to your mind's voice and doing whatever it takes to interpret what you
see. Your result will be unique as no one else has ever, or will ever
see as you do.

It is truly wonderful to be able to see something and present it in a
manner that tells everyone that the resulting piece (in our case, a
photograph), is your interpretation of what you saw. This is a
lifetime endeavor and as such, we always seek to achieve this.

Sorry for being so philosophical about this, but this came to me and I
felt I needed to share it. I hope I have not wasted your time.

Keith

-Hello Keith,

I too feel like the internal feelings and life experiences influence
our perspective on our photographic journeys. I'm posting a website
by Alan Briot who says it much beter than I.

I've just been looking at Ralph Gibson's website and when it comes to seeing, he's pretty amazing.

Thanks for the post Keith. Although this list is geared towards the technical side of
photographic art, nobody on the list would bother to learn the technical stuff if there
wasn't an inner voice calling to them.

Keith - On the contrary, I wish more of us would write comments like
this, although from my observations
the concensus on this list, most of the time, is to keep things
technical.

What you wrote is so true - I'd only add that the ability to make
those visual interpretations with multiple layers of
meaning -- both personal and broader, is a fantastic gift.
As you suggest, most, if not all of us, have to work constantly
to achieve this. It doesn't come easily!

Keith, no need in my mind to apologise about being philosophical..... as we
are all involved in an art form that allows for freedom of expression it
stands to reason that we will over time either become philosophical in
nature or at least learn to appreciate the philosophies of others :o)

Cheers
Sean
