R2 Variable Tone - New Article

R2 Variable Tone - New Article

2006-06-05 by Clayton Jones

Hello All,

I have finally completed my testing with the MIS UT-R2 inks for the
R200/220. My initial results have just been posted as article #10 at
the link below. It describes how to make a variable tone inkset using
a combination of R2-W and R2-N inks that can be controlled with the
slider controls in the Epson driver. I'm very pleased with the
results and have created a set of sample prints that closely match the
BO versions on the same papers, so they can be compared strictly on
technical merits.

I don't have a 220, so would be very interested to hear from any 220
users who try this approach. I'm interested in whatever differences
there might be.

I also have not tried it with PK on any of the new Silver Rag type
papers (still waiting for cut sheets). So I'll be very interested in
hearing from anyone who tries this.

Regards,
Clayton

Wow, great article Clayton! I can't wait to try it. I think this
sounds like a perfect alternative for those of us who maybe don't
want to dive in to the 3D inks yet :)

I agree, start simple. With the 220 and R2 you'll be able to get down the
learning curve and not waste much at all. Learn the sliders, the ICCs, etc.
Then if you later want more control, the printer and even some of the R2
inks are not wasted. The R2 warm inks as well as the Eboni are used in the
3D inkset. Also, this gives us some time to get down the 3D learning curve,
get more ICCs done, and try to get the QC up to where I want it -- which is
higher than the ink industry is accustomed to, including the suppliers to
MIS.

Re: R2 Variable Tone - New Article

This mixture of inks that Clayton is using reminds me UT7 inkset.
On R200 I am using UT7 with UTFSN-4-Y in Y position.
So I guess most of workflow recommendations from this article will
be applicable to UT7 too.

Hello Brian,

I have been very impressed with the quality so far. Obviously there
are many ways to use the sliders, so there's lots of room for
experimenting. I hope other users will report their results here.

Regards,
Clayton

Hey Clayton,

I ordered the warm inkset yesterday so I'll be trying it out shortly
(as long as the post office doesn't "misroute" *another* of my
packages). I'll report back soon.

I also just got a box of the new Innova Ftype Gloss so I'll try that
out with the variable tone method as well.

Thanks!
