Dave..

Your color "dye" inks for the 1280 should look fine against your
1800..BUT longevity is the biggest factor here..Your 1800 prints should
outlast the dye based 1280 prints by MANY years...I use one for "LYSON
Fotonic" dye based inks, which are "claimed" to last longer with certain
LYSON papers than the Epson's Dyes, but have a BETTER color gamut IMHO..

As far as the UT-2 inks go, sure make a few prints with the Epson inks,
make sure you have NO banding or clogging issues, and take them out and
install your UT-2 Inks and then do a couple of 6-color purges from the file
that's available on the MIS Site..Then do a nozzle check and you should be
good -to- go.
yes, you can save your OEM Epson carts by taping over the "vent" holes on
the top of the cartridges, and than taping the exit ports..Place them in a
sealed zip-lock bag "upside-down", and keep them in a dry place at room
temperature..You may need to use them at some point to test you system, or
to clear a clog..1280's will clog from time to time..

FYI, my "other 1280" has the UT-2 inks installed in spongeless carts,
and while not totally trouble free, give excellent results most of the
time..Simply AMAZING!

Subject: [Digital BW] Epson 1280/purging inks

I just got a new Epson 1280 which I will use primarily for Black &
White. I think I'd like to run a few sheets through with the color
first to see how it compares with my R1800. If I do so, and put my
new MIS UT-2 inks in afterwards, is there much ink wasted when purging
out the old color inks; and, is there any feasible way to store the
color carts to reuse again down the road in case of a color
emergency?

Thanks in advance for assistance.

Dave

Re: [Digital BW] Epson 1280/purging inks

2006-06-29 by Edward Wiseman

No, sorry..but the R1800 is NOT ready for PRIME TIME B&W (GREAT for
color though!)..The R2400 is READY!!!.. (@ $750++ Inks etc!!!...)..
The 1280 is also "NG" for B&W as it (and the R1800) will give you "color
casts" in your B&W images..The 1280 with 3rd party inks such as the UT-2's
from MIS WILL give you variable tone results from "sepia" to "cold", or
anything in between via curves from Paul Roark (FREE!) which you can
download from the mIS site, or by using QTR (quad tone rip) from Roy
Harrington(@ $50.00 and worth MANY times that..In addition, with use of the
proper papers, these MIS inks are considered by most to be archival..

..So IMHO, you can either set up a 1280 with 3rd party B&W inks, or get
yourself a R2400, and be able to do both archival Color or B&W (at a
COST$$!!!)....

that's interesting i was at the ny photoshow when they introduced the 1800
and 2400 and the emphasis definitely was on the 1800 for BW ..it had the extra
black and you didn't have to remove a cartridge when going from glossy to
matte...its good to here from people actually using the printers
