R2400 - Question about ABW tonality sliders

R2400 - Question about ABW tonality sliders

2006-08-12 by zisskar

I've read through many posts, but haven't found the answer to this
particular question, and the Epson manual is not informative either.
Do the Shadow/highlight tonality sliders in the ABW mode perform a
function similar to split toning?
In other words, if you set a specific tonality value (using the
tonality wheel for that matter) do the shadow & highlight sliders
proportionally allocate this set tonality, thus creating an effect
similar to the split toning technique?
Before you ask me, why don't you try and see for yourself, I'll tell
you that as with everything else in the ABW settings, it's a hit and
miss situation and initially I'm trying to figure what the other
settings actually do by doing "a lot" of test printing.

Thank you for your feedback

No, they seem to mostly affect the relationships of the densities in the end
5% steps. So, for example, I'm getting a compressed 100% - 95% similar to
working space Gray Gamma 2.2 when I have the Shadows at -10. The hues are
about the same in the relevant parts of the image.

One of the major problems with the ABW mode is that there does not seem to
be a way to control hues beyond the overall moves, which leave some wiggles
that are less than I'd like on some papers -- for example the Crane Silver
Rag I'm working on now.

By the way, to avoid excess color in the image, I've simply taken out the
OEM yellow and put pure carbon (e.g., MIS UT7 LC) in that spot. So, with
the Epson driver and ABW mode, the 2400 is printing B&W images that have the
least amount of color possible for the tones achieved.
