New Golden Trout Wilderness Photo

2006-08-16 by Bob Marsolais

I just posted my first B&W image from the Golden Trout Wilderness
Photography Workshop on my blog page. The address is:

marsophoto.blogspot.com

Make sure you click on the image to view a larger version. Your
comments and constructive criticism (especially!) are welcome.

The week I was able to spend with Paul and others at the camp was a
fantastic experience. Between the combined experience of those
present, as well as the surroundings, it made for a week of
photography that could not be beat!

By the way, for those of us looking to post an image for the first
time (like me) and wanting something quick and easy, I found this free
blog site very good.

Hello Bob,

Makes me want to go there. How was it taken? And how are you
printing it?

Clayton

Clayton and David,

Thank you both for your comments. David, you said exactly what I've
been thinking of doing. Clayton, the photo was taken on TMAX100 35mm
film with a yellow filter. I processed it in XTOL 1:1 and scanned it on
my KM Scan Dual IV at 3200 DPI using VueScan. My printer is a 1280
using QTR with the UT2 inks set to 75% neutral and 25% carbon. So far
the papers I've used are EEM, HPR, and Hawk Mountain's Peregrine Velvet
250. I used the EEM curves for the Peregrine. My favorite so far is
the Peregrine. It prints a bit sharper than HPR. For the reasons you
mentioned in the yellow paper thread, EEM served as my proofing paper.
HPR and Peregrine both track the EEM image extremely well.

I have a hunch that after I implement David's suggestions, I'll get a
better print using less neutral and more carbon. Being I'm relatively
new to this, my biggest challenge is using my image editor, Picture
Window Pro, to maximum advantage. Clayton, several months back I
purchased one of your 5x7 prints. Your print and some sample prints
Paul gave out at the camp are serving as targets of what I am aiming
for.

Hello Bob,

Ok, thanks. Looks nice, was just wondering how it was captured.

>My favorite so far is the Peregrine.

Yup, nice stuff. I have several Hawk Mtn papers in my arsenal. They
fill a unique niche.

I hope you will post more shots from that trip as you get them worked up.

Regards,
Clayton
