First Digital B&W Prints

2002-01-18 by donbga

Hi Folks,

Sometime in the next few days I hope to receive a VM inkset and CFS
kit from MIS for my Epson 1160.

Does anyone have any advice to share for the installation of the CFS
unit. Of course I am excited but I do want to be patient and perform
the instalation correctly. Should I plan on removing the pizza wheels
or can that be ignored for B&W inks?

I plan on starting with Paul Roark's VM workflow for making prints
but also plan on making digital negatives with the Pictorico OHT
material. Any hints for that?

TIA,

Don Bryant

Jerry,

Do you remember if you got pizza wheels on your 3000 with thinner papers or
only thicker ones?

Don,

if you haven't already discovered it, check out Dan Burkeholder's book
on making digital negatives for contact printing. he has a great
workflow outlined, which i've been experimenting with on my 1160 and
1280. the pizza wheels are a problem when printing to transparency
films, such as pictorio. but no problem for bw prints on matte papers.

You have answered my question, I do have both of Dan's books. Have
you used the Pictorico material? I've seen negatives made on this
material and it appears promising. What ink set have you been using
or reccomend?

Thanks,

Don,

i've been using the pictorio film most recently on my 1280, using the
spectral negative workflow, printing with epson color inks. my 1160 is
now a dedicated bw printer, with Piezo or MIS. i haven't tried
printing film negs with the bw inks yet. since you have to trick the
printer into using a paper profile to get the higher res, i'm not so
sure how the pigment inks will take to the film surface.

i must say that i do prefer service bureau negs to the ink jet ones
for the clarity of details, at least when printing in platinum. and
the density really changes the exposure times. they are too thin often
for the work i'm doing.

i would be interested to know how the process works for you, and what
method of printmaking you are doing.

Are you using the Cone driver with MIS inks?

I've talked to people who have taken Dan's class and printed with the
Piezo inks on the Pictorico material and actually viewed the
negatives, they do look pretty good but they may be too thin for some
processes. I'm planning to print Ziatypes. I've also heard that the
midtones do not print well with the Pictorico material.

I've heard the same from others.

As I mentioned I'll be printing Ziatypes, which will be made from
35mm scans. I can't scan my 4x5 and 8x10 negatives now. Also I'll be
priting VDBs and Cyanotypes.

I'll try to keep you updated. This is a major adventure for me.

Thanks,

Don
